When was the last time you balanced your checkbook?
Not just looked at it online and saw what the balance was but actually balanced it on paper or a spreadsheet?
1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, a year? Yesterday I was talking with a banker, yes a banker, who admitted that they had not balanced their checkbook in months. They look at the total on the computer and go with it.
For me balancing my checkbook is the most important financial step I do every day. I use an excel spreadsheet and track every single expense that leaves my checkbook and the income that hopefully is a lot more than the expenses. I know were each penny has gone to and I can see if I am spending way to much in one area.
If you are not balancing your checkbook how do you know that you spent $200 at Starbucks in 1 month, or that your bank is taking extra fees out of your account? I was at the bank because I found that the bank was taking a fee out of my account that should not have been taken out. Some might say it is only $5 and not worth worrying about but I look at $5 a month is $60 a year and I can pay a monthly bill with that.
I urge you to take the time to set up a spreadsheet or system to balance your checkbook at least weekly. Make sure you are in control of where your money is going and know exactly what your money is doing. If you are not in control of your money who is?
