Last week I had the chance to attend the Disney Social Media Moms On the Road Event in Seattle. I have to start off by saying how excited I was that there was a Disney event in Seattle! Woohoo! I was able to drive over to Seattle from Spokane with 2 other bloggers making it a fun road trip. The Disney Social Media Moms On the Road Event was amazing!
The morning started off with receiving our official name tags and breakfast. The breakfast was a great time to mingle with other bloggers and get excited for the days events. I have to say there is something about Disney that gets the pixie dust flying in the room and everyone smiling and laughing.
The room was beautifully decorated with bright and cheery Mickey balloons. How can you not smile when surrounded by the magic of Disney.
Our keynote speaker was the founder and creator of Boogie Wipes Mindee Doney. Mindee has been through the ups and downs of creating your own business and was so open and honest with us about her path. The photo above shows one of my favorite moments from the entire presentation. Being reminded to start as you mean to go is huge! Why start half way? Why start and fail? Instead start with a mission, vision and values to create what you love and dream of. I am one of those people that likes to write down a ton of ideas and then prioritize and analyze them before I dive head first into things. This was a good reminder to start off strong and make sure that I am putting 110% into what I am doing.
There were so many amazing messages shared during this presentation. I feel so inspired and motivated after listening to Mindee talk. She was so open and honest about what it is like to create a company from the ground up and then lose everything and have to file bankruptcy. She shared with us the heartbreak she felt during the process, how hard it was to balance life, business, and being a Mom. One key point that I wrote in bold in my note book was:
You set people’s expectations! It’s OK to say No and set realistic timelines and responses.
Working as a blogger and a business owner I always feel like I need to respond to emails within 30 seconds or lose out on something big. I am always worried about making people wait for my response which has seriously affected my work/life balance. I always have my phone on me or my iPad so I can respond quickly to messages. I don’t want anyone to have to wait for a response even if it is a few hours.
Mindee talked about setting up work hours, life hours and free hours and making sure you give yourself time to decompress and take time for YOU! Mindee shared with us that she has set office hours and after that she walks away from her laptop. That most people do not have her cell phone number and a lot of the times she just doesn’t answer it because she is living life. This was so refreshing to hear! Knowing that you can balance life, work and everything else and still be successful.
Here are a few of the notes that I tweeted out during Mindee’s keynote! I hope they provide you with the light bulb moments they did for me.
Be proactive! don’t sit in a reactive mode! Life is going to go on
Respect what you can and can’t do!
Learn to say No! Embrace what you need to achieve your goals.
Be diligent and conscious in your daily choices! Stay in the day!
Lead to your success!!!!
Overall the Disney Social Media Moms On the Road Event was an inspiring, motivating and encouraging event! I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to attend this event. As a former Disney Castmember I was reminded of my time working at Walt Disney World and how ready I am to go back to the parks. John has never been to Disneyland so I think a trip is in order soon! It is time to put on our Mickey ears and step into the amazing world of Disney again!
