Lime Kiln State Park is known for amazing whale watching! Lime Kiln State Park is located on the western coast of San Juan Island. The park is really easy to find and a great way to spend a few hours.
We visited Lime Kiln State Park late in the afternoon. Sadly we did not see any Orca Whales while we were there. We did get to watch a fantastic sunset over the water.
The is ample parking available at Lime Kiln State Park. There is an interpretive center that has exhibits about the local marine life. The walk down to the whale watching area is an easy hike that only takes a few minutes. There are no facilities down by the water so make sure you take advantage of the facilities at the top of the hill before you get down to the whale watching area. The last thing you want is to see whales and have to run up the hill to use the bathroom.
Lime Kiln State Park is one of the best places in the world to watch Orca Whales from the land. There are picnic tables set up so you can sit back and relax as you watch for whales. We did not see any whales while we visited the park but we did see them on our San Juan Excursion whale watching trip. We watched the whales play right off of Lime Kiln State Park. We could see people sitting at the park watching the whales close to shore.
Lime Kiln State Park is a great place to spend the afternoon while visiting the San Juan Islands. You can pack a picnic and enjoy lunch at the park or pick up a treat from the food truck on site if it is open.
