Have you seen the really cool looking spiral cookies on Pinterest? The ones with the perfect spirals of color that just look amazing. Well this week I attempted to make a Halloween version of those cookies. I am going to say attempted because my swirls turned into camouflage and did not quite swirl. The great thing about Halloween is it is all about the fun colors and being a bit random so hopefully my not so swirled Halloween cookies will work perfectly.
I can’t believe Halloween is right around the corner. It feels like we just celebrated Fourth of July. How in the world are we already deep into Fall with leaves changing colors, the weather cooling off and Christmas music playing at some stores. Do you ever feel like you need a rewind or pause button to make sure you don’t miss a holiday or season?
My next confession other than that I can’t seem to get the swirl on the cookies quite right is that I totally cheated with these cookies……
I used a big ol bag of sugar cookie mix from Costco to make these cookies. I wanted to make something quick, easy and fun without worrying about measuring out ingredients and shifting flour and so on. Some days the quick and easy bags of mix are the best thing in the world for a fast quick treat.
I used icing dye that I picked up at Walmart to color the cookie dough as I mixed it. Notice the spoonfuls of dough missing from each bowl…..My dear and amazing Husband is a bit of a cookie dough fiend and decided to “test” the dough to make sure it tasted great. He said he took a bit from each bowl so I would not have uneven dough. So kind of him to make sure each bowl had the same amount missing. I wondered if he went to work with a black tongue from eating the dough but I never got a chance to see it.
I placed wax paper over my Silpat mat so I would have a guide for rolling out the dough. This made it easier to make sure each of the colors were rolled out close to the same size.
I layered each of the dough colors on top of each other.
Then I started to roll the dough. This is were things kind of went sideways. When I went to cut the dough I ended up smooshing all of the colors together. I am not quite sure how to cut the dough without the colors and dough melding together. Does anyone know the trick to this?
In the end I ended up with not so swirled Halloween Cookies that might be better off being called camouflage cookies or crazy funny Halloween cookies…Either way they tasted pretty darn good and were a lot of fun to make.
