I am about to reach my 5 year anniversary as a blogger. The past 5 years have been filled with a lot of ups and downs. I started thinking about 10 things they don’t tell you when you start blogging. No one wants to admit that blogging is not the fairy tale life that many portray it to be.
These are my top 10 things I didn’t know when I started blogging.
1. Sleep is way over rated
Remember those nights of 8 hours of blissful deep sleep… yeah me either!
A funny thing happened about five years ago. I started working for myself as a blogger. Well honestly five years ago I started working as a blogger I certainly wasn’t working as a paid blogger but that is a whole nother story for another day.
When I left corporate America I thought my stress and worry about sleep would be gone. I was WRONG! It’s 2:30 in the morning and I am working on this blog post because it is keeping me up. I can’t stop writing it in my head while laying in bed. I keep thinking about all of the things I have learned and I need to write them down.
You might be thinking OK well this is just one night…..well honestly this is a lot of nights for me. I eat, sleep, dream about the blog. I have a note pad by the shower and the bed because I seem to come up with my favorite ideas in the weirdest of places.
Don’t take me wrong I am not complaining about this…….because to me it means I am living my dream. I am living my goals, dreams, hopes, missions and everything else everyday. I get to work for myself which is amazing and terrifying at the same time.
So I will happily give up a few hours of sleep if it means that I can continue living MY dreams and pursuing the goals that I have set.
2. Stress comes in many forms including stats, offers, money and so much more
Stress is evil!!!!!!
Seriously stress is just plain evil….It is not a friendly beast that pats you on the back and says good job it is a mean evil black cloud that strikes at the worst of moments.
As a blogger stress comes in so many forms!
One moment you are stressed because no one is reading your site, the next moment you may be stressed because to many people are reading your site and your server can’t handle it.
One moment you are worried that you don’t have any work lined up and how are you going to pay for your internet bill, the next moment you are stressed because everything piled on at one time and now you have so much work and forgot to eat the entire day.
One moment you are stressed because so and so got so and so project and you didn’t but then you are stressed because an email came through with a great project that is perfect for you but how in the world can I get it done along with ….blah…blah…blah
3. The green eyed monster of jealousy is BIG, Hairy and evil at times!
Stress is evil but the green eyed monster of jealousy is just plain horrendous!
It can knock you off your feet
It can make you tear up at the weirdest of things
It can make you feel inadequate and wonder if you are doing the right things
It can make you question every single email, comment, post, and photo you have done for a company
But most of all it just sucks!
There is nothing fun about feeling inadequate and sad when you see another blogger get a project, trip or event.
I fully admit to having moments where the green evil hairy monster overtakes me and I have doubts. I keep telling myself that it is a good thing that other bloggers are getting great opportunities because that means there may be more for me soon BUT and it is a big BUT it still hurts.
I have to tell myself to embrace the green evil hairy monster and look at what I have done and what I want to do instead of letting it eat away at me.
4. Hard work pays off
Work Hard..Play Hard
Blogging is HARD WORK!!!! There are some killer, amazing, oh my goodness I can’t believe I get to do this moments but the majority of your time is spent typing at your computer. And typing, and more typing and oh my goodness more typing.
BUT the HARD WORK has benefits!
5. Building a tribe of bloggers you love is vital to your sanity
Having a tribe of bloggers who you love and who get you is vital! Many days I think having a blogging tribe is more important than Chai tea and that is saying a LOT!
These bloggers will help you threw moments of stress, when the green evil hairy monster of jealousy hits, they will share great contacts with you, they will keep you smiling, and most of all they will get YOU!
Blogging is an odd job! It is not the normal 9-5 job that most people are used to. Having a group of bloggers who gets what you are doing and knows what you are going through is so dang important.
6. You have to measure your success to you not to other bloggers or you will lose your mind
I can not stress this enough! I wish I could turn this line into a billboard in Time Square!
You Rock! You are amazing! You can not judge or worry about what others are doing.
Don’t judge your blog against someone who may have years more experience, or may have an entire team of assistants and writers.
You never know what is happening behind the scenes!
7. When you say you are a blogger people will look at you like you are talking a foreign language
A few of my favorite responses to being a blogger include
~ So your Husband supports your hobby?
~Does that mean you can’t get a normal job?
~I don’t know what that is but good for you
~Wow, I didn’t know that was considered a profession
I could get mad, angry, or upset each time I hear one of these lovely responses. Instead I just take it with a grain of salt and figure I am on the cutting edge of new media.
8. Some days you will wonder what the heck you started, dove into and if you have lost your mind
There are days…oh there are days..
When you will wake up and wonder what in the heck you are doing.
You will wonder if you have lost your mind. I mean seriously who does this for a living.
These are the perfect days to walk away from your computer and take a break. Do something for you. Remember the work hard PLAY HARD mentality and go have fun!
9. Blogging is a roller coaster of highs and lows
5 years ago I strapped myself into a roller coaster without realizing it and I have not gotten off the ride yet.
The blogging coaster includes amazing highs and crazy lows. There are loop-de-loops, spirals, switch backs, corkscrews, free falls, and so much more being a blogger (yes, I totally Googled roller coaster terms 🙂 )
There are days that you wonder when the ride will end and there are days you wish the coaster would speed up. Most of all there are amazing moments that just take your breath away.
I mean really who gets to do some of the amazing things we get to do as bloggers. This past year I had the opportunity to walk the red carpet for Iron Man 3 and interview Gwyneth Paltrow. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that was even an possibility for my bucket list let alone real life.
10. Blogging is an outlet, dream, amazing, crazy, and so much more.
I absolutely love blogging! I get up each morning excited to blog, OK not every morning but 90% of the time. Some mornings the blankets on my bed are just to darn inviting and I need to spend extra time snuggled with them 🙂
Being a blogger has given me so many amazing opportunities, friendships and really so much more! BUT and it is a BIG BUT this is not an easy career choice.
You don’t just wake up with 100’s of thousands of readers who all love you and want to read every single word you write.
Hard work pays off! I truly believe you get back what you put into blogging and life.
I spend hours and hours on my blog! It is not uncommon for me to be at my desk at 2 in the morning typing, replying to emails, processing photos and other day to day tasks it takes to run a blog.
I put in way more hours as a blogger than I did in Corporate America and I love it!
If you are a blogger what do you wish you would have known when you started blogging? Are you thinking about blogging what questions can I answer for you?
