One thing about traveling to Hawaii is we always seem to wake up crazy early in the morning. It is a 2 hour time zone change from Spokane so we are normally up by 4am while we are on the island.
Our first morning we were up early enough to watch the moonset and the sunrise as we enjoyed our balcony.
We spent the early morning just relaxing and soaking up the moment. I finished my 4th book and just soaked up doing absolutely nothing. We so rarely slow down and take time to just chill.
The morning was spent wandering the Marriott Waikoloa and enjoying the beauty of Hawaii. There is just something so gorgeous about the tropical flowers and coffee trees on the island.
We wandered the beach and watched the sun rise as we looked for turtles. Sadly we didn’t see any turtles but it was still a gorgeous walk.
We sadly had to check out of the Marriott but we got to check into our condo so that was great. A not so quick Costco run as we loaded up on groceries, gifts, and random stuff we found wandering and we were off to the condo.
I loved being able to cook dinner and just relax in the condo.
One benefit of jet lag and waking up super early is getting out early and heading out to explore. We hit up one of my favorite places on the island! The South Point Bakery is plain and simply delicious! I would willingly drive 2.5 hours to enjoy a lilikoi malasada any chance I get.
They are pure tropical deliciousness! This is one of my must visit places every time we are on the island. They also have coconut turnovers which John loves but I am all about the Lilikoi Malasadas. Trust me they are the best!
Oh and they have seriously cute green lizards all over the place!
Since we were sugared up and had a bit of energy we popped over to Volcano National Park to work on some photos we need for an upcoming project. We did a hike out to a petroglyph field which was amazing. It was quite a crazy hike along the lava fields. You just followed footprints and hoped you were heading in the right direction for about .7 miles. There was a great walkway around the petroglyphs highlighting some of the 20,000+ carvings in the area.
Volcano National Park is just amazing! So many more pics to share soon!
On the way back to the condo we stopped at another island favorite….the black sand beach on the Big Island!
We try to visit at least once every time we are on the island. The black sand beach is a great place to look for turtles basking in the sun.
This trip we were blessed to see 5 turtles in the same area basking in the sun. The island is under a high wind and high surf warning so the waves were a bit crazy. We skipped getting in the water and just watched the waves.
We tried to grab a sunset shot on our way back to the condo but sadly it was lost behind the clouds. We are on a mission to get as many sunset photos as we possibly can while we are here.
