WOW!! What a crazy fun week it has been. Late late last Saturday night we flew into Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a semi-vacation. I call it a semi-vacation because neither one of us is very good at not working and taking time off. BUT we did manage it a bit more than usual on this trip which felt so good.
Sunday morning we drove from Fort Lauderdale to Port Canaveral near Orlando. We ended up booking our flights into Fort Lauderdale because the tickets were over $350 cheaper for each of us. So worth doing the extra 3 hour drive to save $700 bucks!
I know it won’t shock you that we stopped at the first Starbucks we saw…in the airport and then at the first Cracker Barrel for breakfast. I am a creature of habit at times and both of these places are a favorite.
After a delicious breakfast we hit the road north. Poor John didn’t sleep at all on the flight down so I ended up driving and he slept the entire time. So I don’t have any fun car pics to share our roadtrip adventure.
Once we reached Cape Canaveral we had an hour or two to explore. We found a fun micro-brewery that John is going to share on Park Ranger John soon. Then it was time for VACATION! Woot Woot!
We boarded the Carnival Sunshine for a few days of sunshine, tropical drinks, cruise ship naps and chill time.
It was so much fun being back on the Carnival Sunshine. We knew all the places we had to visit again and enjoy! 1st up for dinner…Cucina Del Capitano! HELLO YUM! Oh my goodness this food! Damm it is so good. I am not sure what they put in the ricotta cheese that comes with the bread serving but I am pretty sure it is magical. I am going to admit to eating WAY MORE bread than I probably needed just so I could enjoy more of the ricotta cheese magical spread.
After a delicious gigantic dinner we crashed early and got a full nights sleep. This was a shorter cruise so we hit our first port the next morning. Country #55 for me the Bahamas!
Our first stop was Freeport and Carnival set us up with a great all inclusive beach getaway for the day. Woohoo we enjoyed Bahama Mamas in the Bahamas! Which made me giggle even before I had two of them and my cheeks turned pink because I am such a light weight.
I tried to blame it on not seeing the sun for a few months in Spokane but truly I am a light weight and two waterdowned cocktails and my cheeks are pink.
The day was spent lounging on the beach and attempting to get into the water. While the sun was out and gorgeous the water was beautiful and chilly! It took me about 30 minutes to ease my way slowly in to my shoulders.
John is all about diving in head first and getting it over with. I am all about easing in and taking it step by step. A funny look at how we live our lives. LOL
Once back on the Sunshine we took advantage of having spa access with our spa room. We tried out ALL OF THEM thermal rooms and the relaxing stone beds. Do you think it is possible to have a heated stone bed inserted into our living room. Oh my goodness the bliss.
I don’t know why or how laying back on hard stone chairs can feel so good but it does.
Tuesday we visited Nassau for the first time. We had another fun beach excursion planned for the day. I am going to out myself right now and say that I 100% booked this shore excursion completely based on the fact that the island had the only Starbucks located on a private island.
Yes, it is true! I booked an excursion specifically around getting a chai tea and visiting a Starbucks. Crazy I know but so much fun.
We skipped getting in the water since we learned quickly in Freeport just how chilly it was and instead spent the day curled up in lounge chairs napping and watching the world go by. I even managed to turn my phone off and spend time just relaxing.
This may have been due to the battery dying but it did mean that I wasn’t always connected so either way it was a win.
Back on the ship we chilled on the balcony and just explored the ship. There are so many things to see and do on this ship! I am so glad this was our second visit to the ship. We found fun new spots we had missed when we sailed on the Sunshine a few years ago.
Wednesday brought us to Half Moon Cay. Can you believe this was our first time visiting a private cruise island. Crazy! We have done almost 20 cruises and this was our first time to the Bahamas and our first time on a private cruise island. I don’t know how that happened.
Half Moon Cay is a magical stretch of sand that everyone needs to experience. The sand is literally sugar soft and so nice.
We spent a few hours lounging in chairs and just relaxing. During the morning dark ominous looking clouds kept stacking up around us. We decided to head back to the ship before it might pour on us and we had to run in the rain.
I was so sad to leave the island. Did you know that Half Moon Cay has 2 miles of white sand beach you can wander up and down. I would love to go back and just spend time wandering all over the island. The majority of the island is still natural and a great bird habitat.
Once we were back on the Sunshine it was time to relax and do everything we could fit in with our last bit of time on the ship. This was a shorter cruise so we only had a sea day to go and then sadly we had to hop off the ship.
We ended up curling up in bed and watching the Will Smith movie Hitch. It was amazing. Not the movie per se but just spending time relaxing and not worrying about anything. It felt so good to just turn our brains off and relax. A great reminder of how much we need to make sure we are taking time for us and to relax.
Our day at sea did include some work time but you can’t get a much better office than this.
The Red Frog Pub was the perfect office environment for us to get some work done and enjoy a tropical cocktail or 2.
Plus the Groove for St. Jude which I love was on our sea day! Any chance we have to give back to the kids at St. Jude we are taking. Keep an eye out soon for a post on all of the ways you can help the kids and families at St. Jude during your Carnival Cruise.
Sadly Friday morning it was time to hop off the ship…BOO!
We got off the ship super early in the morning and headed to pick up our rental car. We leisurely drove along the A1A and enjoyed the ocean breezes as we headed back to Fort Lauderdale .John had an early afternoon flight home and I spent one extra night in Florida.
Saturday morning early it was time for me to head to the airport. I had to leave the hotel by 4am…so early.
Pretty sure this picture is a reflection of getting up so early in the morning and being way to tired but finding a new editing app on your phone. LOL!
This next week will be filled with crazy fun Mardi Gras celebrations. Bring on the King Cake, beads, zydeco music, and fun!
Lots of updates will be coming out on Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook this week during the event.
Send me good thoughts that I don’t fall off the parade float we are riding on. This is my first time riding a float and I am so excited but also nervous since I can trip over my own feet.
Have an amazing week!!!
