Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park also known as the City of Refuge

In old Hawaii, if you broke the law, the penalty was death. Your only option for survival was to elude your pursuers and reach the nearest puuhonua, or city of refuge. As you enter, the great wall rises up before you marking the boundaries between the royal grounds and the sanctuary. Many ki’i (carved wooden images) surround the Hale o Keawe, housing the bones of the chiefs that infuse the area with their power or mana. If you reached this sacred place, you would be saved….

Hawaii Pictures to melt away the winter blues!

Are you feeling the winter blues? Do you need a bit of sunshine and warm weather. I wish I could transport all of us to a tropical island to soak up a bit of sun and enjoy a frothy fruity drink. Sadly that is not in my budget but I can share a few warm and sunny Hawaii pictures. These are some of my favorite photos from our travels to Hawaii.  Hawaii is one of our favorite places in the world.  The photos below are from the Big Island. Our favorite sunset spot on the Big Island is A-Bay on the Kona Coast.

Blue Hawaiian Cocktail Recipe

It’s 5 O’clock Aloha Friday lets have a Blue Hawaiian!

I love taking pictures of the lizards when we visit Hawaii. They are so bright and beautiful.  You find them all over the place while visiting the islands. I love seeing them on the side of buildings and on plants.  When I lived on the Big Island we used to have to chase them out of our kitchen. They would scurry along the counter top looking for pieces of food. This was not something I was used to coming from Washington. My roommates thought I was a bit crazy thinking they were so cute. They wanted them out of the house quickly.

Hawaii Green Lizard

There is an amazing bakery located in South Point on the Big Island. Every time we are on the island we drive down to visit the bakery. They have the most amazing Lilikoi Malasadas! I could honestly eat them by the box full if I could get away with it and not gain 100 pounds just looking at them. They are down right melt in your mouth delicious!…

Pina Colada Recipe

While John and I were in Hawaii a few months ago we heard this great Aloha Friday song. We had to stop what we were doing and just listen to the music. It was so much fun and made us smile. We started talking about what we love to do in Hawaii and the relaxed feeling we get while we are in Hawaii. We wanted to find a way to bring the island life, relaxation and fun back home with us to Spokane. We decided to celebrate 5 O’clock Aloha Friday each week! We will be sharing tropical drink recipes, island memories and so much more each week.

This week we are kicking it off with my personal favorite the Pina Colada! We visit a tiki bar called Don the Beachcombers on the Big Island every time we are there. They have fantastic happy hour specials that just happen to coincide with watching the sun set over the ocean. There is nothing quite like sitting back with a Pina Colada in hand watching the sun set, dolphins swim in the ocean, and spending time with your Husband.

I hope everyone enjoys 5 O’Clock Aloha Friday and you are able to relax and have a great Friday night!…
