We travel a lot! I know this probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise to most of you if you have been following the blog for a while. One thing I have found with traveling is organization is key!
I am an overpacker. I fully and completely admit it. I tend to last minute throw things in a bag and then keep throwing things in a bag until the bag barely shuts and I am hoping I am not going to have to rearrange items at the airport.
One of my goals as we travel more is to be more organized and plan ahead for packing. Here are some of my favorite Travel Packing Tips!
1. Use packing bags to stay organized
Packing bags are a great way to stay organized. You can use them to divide your clothes by event, type or just to make it easier to fit everything in a bag. If you have a piece of clothing that you don’t want rubbing against anything else you can easily store them in packing bags. I like to use them to make sure my dirty clothes are kept in one place.
I found these great Eagle Creek packing bags at The Container Store® and they are perfect for organizing my suitcase.
2. Use Toiletry bags to cut down on weight and space needed
Repackage your favorite shampoo, conditioner, body wash and other toiletry items in specialty travel containers that you can find at The Container Store® is a great way to cut down on space and weight in your bag. This 3-1-1 Quart Travel Pack from The Container Store® works perfect for minimizing the space and weight of your toiletries.
3. Pack clothes that can used for different events.
Neurtral colored clothes are perfect for long term travel. Items that can be mixed and matched together to form new outfits. Packing a few specialty pieces for special dinners or to brighten up the look is a great way to not feel like you are always in the same clothes.
4. If you are traveling with your spouse or family divide your clothes between suitcases.
This is one of our best tips! Dividing your clothes between suitcases helps ensure everyone has clean clothes. If one suit case is lost in travel you are not stuck in your flight clothes until the bag is found. This also means that you don’t have to glare at your spouse whose bag showed up while yours is traveling the world without you…not that we have ever done this of course….
5. For long flights pack clothes to sleep in and then change out of.
If you are flying a long distance packing a pair of sleep pants can help break up the flight and also make it easier to get a good nights sleep. This can help you feel like you are changing it up on the plane and giving yourself the opportunity for a great nights sleep…or as good as you can get on a plane. Plus it is a lot more comfortable than trying to sleep in your jeans.
6. Bring snacks
If you are traveling for a while having your favorite snack is a great way to take a break and treat yourself. Sometimes all it takes is a small treat from home to relax and destress on a long trip.
7. Resealable bags are your friend
Pack more resealable bags than you think you will need. These bags can be used for almost anything. We pack a variety of sizes from the large 2 gallon bags to the snack size bags. They are perfect for wet clothes, papers you want to keep dry, organizing items, garbage and so much more.
8. Leave space in your bag for expansion
I tend to fill my bag and then realize I didn’t leave any space for new things. I would love to say we don’t bring many things home from our trips but that would just not be honest or real life. There is always some fun souvenir big or small that I want to bring home. Leaving space in your bag for expansion will save having to pay for an extra suitcase and make things a lot easier when you back to come home.
9. Pack on the bed or a surface you can see everything before it goes into the suitcase
Lay out the items you plan on packing on a bed or flat surface so you can see everything before it goes into the suitcase. This is a great way to make sure you don’t end up packing 12 pairs of pants and 2 shirts. You can also spread items between suitcases this way and know that you have a full set of clothes and not just shirts in one suitcase and pants in another
10. Count what you pack and use a checklist
This may sound odd but take a second to count how many shirts, pants and other items you are packing. Use a checklist to list any special clothes or items you need for the trip. Do you need a formal outfit, closed toe shoes, a hat or special items for a specific portion of your trip?
