Most tourists to the Big Island of Hawaii spend most of their time on the beaches soaking up the sun. Few make their way to Waimea which is higher up on the mountain. Parker Ranch calls this home and is the largest private cattle ranch in the US. This brings about a Christmas Parade you would not expect Hawaii.
Waimea’s finest showed for the event looking sharp! There were several Police and Firefighters and was obvious they were well respected within their community. It was easy to tell why as they interacted with everyone and seemed to know everyone.
The parade started off like most parades with everything you would expect. There were groups selling hot chocolate and coffee as fundraisers, people lining up along the streets anxiously waiting. It was rather cold out but everyone was in high spirits. This is a very local parade being there were mostly locals attending as opposed to tourists. Soon the parade began!
soon the road was filled with UTV’s, trucks and people walking in the parade. There were lots of cheering, candy being tossed to children and smiles everywhere.
There was even a train and a VW Beetle. This was just the warm up to what was to come. I was here for something else, something much larger. I was here for the big rigs, the semi-trucks. The crowd began to cheer louder at the first signs of the semi trucks! There was many hours dedicated to the decorating of these trucks. Adults, along with kids were excited to see them!
This parade had been on my bucket list for years and it did not disappoint! I left excited and talking about it to anyone willing to listen. I was even more excited to see the photos I had taken. I have to say that I was so excited when I saw semi truck after semi truck coming down the road all light up.
Even Santa Claus made his appearance on the back of a semi truck! If you find yourself on the Big Island around Christmas, see if this parade is during your visit. Just remember to come a couple hours early as it is a very popular parade. Also give yourself time to get a Malasada from the food truck and just enjoy the experience.
