Some days travel is super easy and smooth….Other days travel is a bunch of road blocks that keep you from achieving you planned goals.
Our layover in Amsterdam was one of those travel days that we kept hitting road blocks. We had huge plans for our 19 hour layover and I am so sad to say we did not achieve any of them. It was just one of those days that nothing went as smooth as you hope it would.
We arrived in Amsterdam on Halloween night and thought about going downtown and checking out the festivities. We checked into our hotel and the front desk attendant advised us we might be better off staying in at the hotel. She said that Friday nights especially on Halloween was not the best time to check out the city for the first time.
We took her advice and spent the evening enjoying Halloween themed cocktails in the bar and attempting to get a good night sleep. Our room was more than we could have hoped for except for the random alarm beeping every 15 minutes. At about 5 am we figured out it was the phone and disconnected it from the wall. We managed to get a good hour of sleep at this point.
We woke up and enjoyed an amazing breakfast including trying great Dutch cheeses and fresh hot coffee. Our goal after breakfast was to take the hotel shuttle back to Schipol Airport to grab the train to the central station. The hotel front desk said it should only take us about 45 minutes from the hotel to Central Station. Well……….an hour and a half later we were still in the train station trying to get to town.
This was just not our morning. We tried 8 times to get the train ticket machine to take our credit card and buy tickets. Each time we almost got to the end of purchasing the tickets it cancelled our transaction. We finally found the train ticket counter and bought tickets for the train. We headed down the ramp to the train and missed the train by about 6 seconds.
The next train was cancelled and then we were told to wait for the next train and transfer at another train station to get downtown. At this point we realized we would have less than an hour downtown before having to head back for our flight home.
Instead of pushing it and trying to make it downtown we decided we would just need to do an Amsterdam Re-Do trip soon. A trip that we have time to explore the city and see everything it has to offer. We have seen so many gorgeous photos of the city and heard so many raving reviews we didn’t want our first visit to be marred by the stress of making it back to the hotel and then to the airport.
One of the great things about Schipol airport and train station is the giant shopping complex that is attached. We ended up spending our time relaxing at Starbucks and checking out the grocery store. I love visiting grocery stores and seeing the prices and what is offered. We found great gifts for friends and family at the grocery store. How can you go wrong with chocolate clogs and waffle cookies!
Hopefully soon we will be able to visit Amsterdam for more than 19 hours.
