Please let us know if we can answer any questions about visiting Alaska on a cruise ship.
As a resident of one of the towns you visited in Alaska , I would like to add this advice to you and to all others who visit not only Alaska but any other destination.
Respect.
Treat any place that you visit as you would like a visitor to treat the place that you live. Realize that what you see, wildlife, flora, fauna is not put on show just for you, it’s there 24/7 365. Yes we speak English, you don’t need to go to a bank to exchange American money for the money we use, no we don’t live in igloo’s nor do we have pet polar bears or walruses. Those are some of the stupid, yes STUPID questions we get asked every year ! Be aware. The town in which I live has had to employ crossing guards for the tourist season. No I am not making this up š Tourists seam to think it’s ok to cross the street where ever and whenever they so please. In the summer of 2007 a tourist walked out of a building on one of the cruise ship docks, put their head down and then walked straight into the path of a moving vehicle. They were still pressure washing the area the next day. Do a little homework before your cruise, visit a towns chamber of commerce website for instance. Yes you are on a cruise to visit/learn about Alaska but doing a little homework before hand will make your visit all the better. You will find that what Alaska is really like is different than what you have heard about, or seen on those so called “reality shows”
We are taking this same cruise in August, with all the same stops. I noticed you said you had a difficult time spotting whales because it mostly happened at daybreak, but which stop, from what you heard had the highest chance of spotting whales? Want to make sure to give that stop top priority. Thanks!!!
HI Alyssa,
We were told that whales could happen in any of the ports or parts of the cruise. The ship did a great job of letting us know when it was a high probability of seeing whales. I think we did not see them as much because of the time of year we went and the misty mornings with the weather. We are going again this August and really hoping that the whale viewing is better. I have heard great things about cruising to Alaska in August and can’t wait to do it.
Very good info. Lucky me I came across your website by accident (stumbleupon).
I’ve bookmarked it for later!
