One of our favorite places to visit is the Anhinga Trail in the Everglades National Park. The Anhinga Trail is a must see for any visit to the Everglades.
On the way into the Anhinga Trail parking lot you can see my favorite sign letting you know that panthers may be in the area. I am going to be completely honest and say I might just squeal a bit if we ever saw a panther.
The first wildlife we normally see at the Anhinga Trail is the vultures. They are normally all over the parking lot. There are signs warning you to not leave anything out that they may like and to check your windshields to make sure they have not pecked at the windshield lining. We have visited many times and have never had a problem (knocking on wood to make sure we don’t in the future)
Every time we have been to the Anhinga Trail we have seen a ton of alligators. The last time we were there an alligator was walking along side the parking lot.
The alligators are happy to smile and pose for a picture. I would not suggest getting very close to one because their teeth look pretty darn scary. I am always amazed at how close other tourists get to the alligators. I like to leave a few feet minimum between me and their teeth.
One of the frequently seen birds in the area are the Anhinga that the trail was named after. You will see them in the trees with their wings spread out drying them in the sun. They are nicknamed the snake bird because they look like a snake when they are in the water.
Depending on the time of year you visit you may have the chance to see baby Alligators sunning themselves on the rocks. They are so dang cute. It is hard to believe they grow up to be as big as they are.
