Our current house is over 100 years old and a bit persnickety when it comes to deciding it wants to cool down or heat up depending on the day. I feel like some days the house laughs at us and just decides if we are going to be a sweating mess or a frozen ice cube. Enter in a bit of amazing tech from Best Buy and we can now control our house temps with Google Home and the Nest Thermostat.
Confession….I know nothing about thermostats, electrical wires or the combination of both of these. When the Nest arrived I had a bit of trepidation but also crazy excitement at getting it set up. I knew that it would involve removing the old thermostat dealing with wires and knowing what was what. The directions in the Nest said it takes on average 30 minutes. I figured that meant a few hours for me since I know nothing about anything electrical. Happily, John was home with me and we dove into getting it all set up.
Here is my first piece of advice…do not wait until 8 pm to set up the Nest! Funny thing…you have to shut the power off to your house which means all of your lights won’t work. We made the mistake of starting around 8 pm when the sun was going down and by the time we were done we were using our cell phone flashlights to get it all taken care of.
Setting up the Nest was a lot easier than I thought it would be even with a few hiccups along the way. The Nest set up kit includes stickers that you can label each wire to show what it was plugged into on your old thermostat. 2nd piece of advice – Take a photo or 2 of your old thermostat before you remove any wires. 3rd piece of advice – write out a menu of wires to letters on a piece of paper as a backup. We were so thankful that we did both of these things.
One of the best things that happened while setting up the Nest was the tech services offered 24 hours a day by Nest. We had everything set up minus 1 pesky wire that we couldn’t figure out where to put it. We called up Nest and John answered and helped us out. We were able to send him an email with a photo of our original thermostat and he sent back this great pic showing us where to place all of our wires. Plus he was super friendly and fun to talk with.
(please do not use this pic as a guide to set up your Nest! Every system is different)
After talking with John from Nest we had everything set up and ready to go. The Nest told us that it was calibrated to our house and we headed to bed.
Now this is when the story takes a turn we didn’t expect….We woke up dripping in sweat! I have to tell you it was not pretty! We were sweaty, slightly grumpy, and oh so confused. We walked over to the Nest and realized that the house was 85 degrees at 5 am. Yep, something was wrong and we had no clue what it was.
Enter in Nest customer service again and this time we chatted with Gordon who was also a rockstar and so much help. Come to find out that the wire we didn’t know what to do with the night before was actually not needed. Somehow it was telling our Nest that our heat pump was the a/c and well you get the picture. Gordon was such a big help and in a couple of minutes, we had it all figured out.
Here is the part where I pat myself on the back and did a little happy dance. I moved the wires around! I know this may not be a big thing for most people but I am not a wire kind of girl especially ones that have electricity potentially flowing to them. Gordon walked me through it all and the system was fixed and working great. I might have done a bit of a happy dance that a. the a/c was finally running, b. I didn’t blow the house up, and c. that I didn’t shock myself and end up with Einstein’s hair. I was already a hot sweaty mess at this point, Einstein hair would not have helped the look at all.
I tell you all of this because I honestly want you to know that anyone can get a Nest set up even if it takes a little help from the Nest customer service line. Between the customer service at Best Buy and the service at Nest, I am pretty sure this may be the best combination of buying/set up of products we have had in a while.
Now that the Nest is fully set up and working as it is supposed to be I am able to sync it with my Google Home which I love. From my office I can ask the Google home what the current temp is in our house, to increase or decrease the temperature and so much more. I love that we are creating our tech dream home that helps us save money and be more efficient.
A random final piece of advice…Ask your Google Home to tell you a joke! So fun! Also, did you know you can do mad libs with your Google Home? We are finding so many uses for the Google Home! I can’t wait to add a few more to other rooms of the house.
