Today I learned that by spending 1-hour giving blood I have the potential to save three peoples lives!!!
Let that sink in for a second. 1 hour of our time has the potential to truly be life-saving for someone else. We have the power and opportunity to help a family, a mom, a dad, a sister, a brother, a baby, a kid, a grandparent live another day with their loved ones.
Right now blood donations are in serious need! During the summer donations drop on average by 20% causing the blood banks to have less blood available for patients.
I have always had the misconception that blood donations went to accident victims most likely due to what we see on TV. When in reality most blood goes to patients being treated for cancer, undergoing orthopedic surgeries, organ and marrow transplants, cardiovascular surgeries and being treated for inherited blood disorders.
Today I am wondering if John had blood given to him during his knee surgeries over the past few years. I don’t know if he did but now I am thankful that someone donated just in case John would have needed the blood.
Every 2 seconds in the United States someone needs a transfusion of donated blood. EVERY 2 SECONDS!!! I had no idea!
As I am typing this my mind is whirling trying to take in all of this new information and process it. One in seven people who enter the hospital will need a blood transfusion.
Think of the family members you know that have gone into the hospital, the friends, the people you only know on social media but have gotten close to. It is scary to think that the blood banks may not have enough blood to treat each of these patients.
We all have the opportunity to help our neighbors, our family members or someone we may never meet but who lives another day due to our donation of blood.
It takes about an hour I learned to donate and you can donate every 56 days, up to six times a year. Just think that if we each go in 6 times a year we could be saving 18 peoples lives.
We can each help save 18 peoples lives……..

Our motto and goal this year has been to spread joy. I don’t know of a better way to spread joy than by donating blood and helping someone see another day.
