One of the weird things about blogging and working online is most of your really close friends end up living far away from you. I have great friends all around the country now that I rarely get to see in person but talk to on a daily basis.
I was so excited when I heard about the Facebook Portal and Portal Plus available at Best Buy. Facebook messenger is how I stay connected with a ton of my blogging friends. We talk about life, work, and everything under the sun all day long. Using our phones propped up at an angle so we can see each other if we are using a video messenger.
NOW we don't have to worry about our phones slipping and all of a sudden chatting to the ceiling instead of seeing each other. We don't have to stress at all with the Facebook Portal set up!
When I first heard about the Facebook Portal and Portal Plus I wasn't sure what to think about them. I wasn't sure if they were just going to be another piece of tech taking up space but not really having a function. I was honestly really skeptical when the boxes came in that I would enjoy using them. The first thing that I noticed was how easy set up was. You literally just plug the Facebook Portal into a power source and it guides you through set up.
It took maybe 5 minutes and that was 4.5 minutes of updates and me trying to remember our WiFi password.
Once the Facebook Portal is set up you can link it to your Pandora Account, Amazon Alexa Account and more. The Facebook Portal becomes a hub of the sites that you use most often.
I set the Portal Plus up on our kitchen island to see how I felt about it. One thing to know is it is pretty large. You will want to make sure you have ample space for it. There is a camera cover that comes in the box so you don't have to worry about someone popping over while you are in your robe sipping on that first glorious cup of coffee in the morning.
One perk that I didn't realize I would love so much is the random photos that the Portal shares if you want it to. I set ours up so that random Facebook photos flow by as it is waiting for me to use it. Every time I walk into the kitchen now I can't help but smile as a Facebook photo shows on the screen. You can set it up to show photos from friends and family also.
My friend Vera from Lady and the Blog posted about how they are using their Facebook Portal to keep in touch with her Mom. The kids can have nightly story time with Grandma and it feels like she is right there with them. Oh, and the stories are interactive making them even more amazing! I love that you can use Facebook Portal to keep in touch with family that may not be able to visit all the time.
We are trying to set up a surprise for John's Mom for Christmas. I am pretty sure she has never seen her grandsons open their Christmas presents. We always call in over the phone and can hear the paper ripping but have never seen their faces when they get their gifts. I am going to try and set up a surprise where we can use the Facebook Portal to message with John's sister and see them open their gifts. I am pretty sure this will be the biggest gift we can give John's Mom. Did I mention the boys are 15 and 19? Kind of crazy to think that John's Mom has never seen them open their gifts. They live in Alabama and we are in Spokane, WA so this is going to be such a fun surprise.
When I stopped being skeptical about the Facebook Portal and started to think about how many ways you could use it to keep in touch with friends and family I truly changed my mind and started to love it. We live in a world where time flies by so quickly and we are always on the run. We tell ourselves we need to reach out to see people but then something comes up and we are on the run again. With Facebook Portal it is so easy to reach out and see the people you care about.
It can be as easy as making dinner while chatting with your BFF or family members. You can share a glass of wine virtually with your BFF and chat about your day. Kids can have their grandparents read them a story. You can chat about work with a co-worker who doesn't live near you. There are honestly hundreds of ways that the Facebook Portal can keep us connected with the people that are important to us.
I went from a skeptic to so excited after getting the Facebook Portal set up on our kitchen counter. I love knowing that at the touch of a button or by saying Hey Portal call....I can reach people that are important to me.
Did I mention that you can bring up to six people into the call even if they do not have a Portal! The camera will change dimensions to make sure you can see everyone clearly.
