During my trip to New Brunswick we spent the morning exploring the Fundy Discovery Aquarium in St. Andrews by the Bay. One of the things I really enjoyed about this aquarium is the fact that it focuses on the local waterways and sea life.
The aquarium is set up to be a hands on educational experience that is still a lot of fun for all ages. There are 2 large touch tanks with sea stars, sea cucumbers, and so much more. The aquarium is set up so even the littlest of guests can stand on benches to see into the touch tanks.
From the moment you walk in the staff is there to answer your questions, tell you about the aquarium and make sure you enjoy your visit. They have a art table set up for kids to enjoy coloring. I just love these DIY Hand Print pictures for kids. So creative.
The displays within the aquarium do a great job explaining the local ecosystem in an easy to understand manner. You can see how the fish and sea life live at the different levels of the water.
They have a display of salmon that they are raising and will then release into the bay. The salmon are not doing great in the area so the aquarium is working to replenish the salmon population.
Check out this video explaining the work the aquarium is doing with the salmon
The aquarium has 2 resident seals named Loki and Snorkel that are really interesting to watch. The kids in our group had so much fun watching them swim by.
If you have little ones that like to play there is a great kids area on the lower level. Kids can play games like I Spy with sea animals, pin the tale on the shark and so much more. There is a boat that kids can play on along with other games and toys.
The Fundy Discovery Aquarium looks out over the bay and has a few picnic tables for lunch. The view is gorgeous and well worth taking a few moments to enjoy.
My favorite part of the aquarium is how locally focused it is. You are not going to see a ton of tropical fish and exotic sea creatures at the aquarium.
