After attending the Sams Town 300 Nascar Race I thought we were prepared for the Kobalt Tools 400 Nascar Race in Las Vegas. Our friend kept telling us that the Sams Town 300 Nascar Race was the mini race compared to the Kobalt Tools 400. I really did not honestly believe that there would be that big of a difference. I was wrong! We started the day with a visit to the Neon Garage and then it was race time!
The race started with a flyover by the Blue Angels. Wow! It was amazing to see them fly right over our head. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is located right near the air force base in Las Vegas. We were able to watch the planes land during the race which was a lot of fun.
I thought I was prepared for how loud the race would be after attending the Sams Town 300 the day before. Wow! The cars in the Kobalt Tools 400 are the big boys! They were so loud it was amazing. We held up our water bottle and the water vibrated as the cars went by us.
One of my favorite parts of the race was watching the pit stops. It is amazing to see how choreographed and in sync with each other all of the pit crew is. They change tires, add gas and maintain the car so quickly. I thought it was interesting that a single piece of equipment can not leave the crew area. If a piece of equipment or tire goes outside of that specific cars area they are penalized with a lap. This is a huge penalty when the race is decided by fractions of a second.
We brought ear protection with us and I was so thankful. They also sell ear protection at the race but it was a lot more expensive than bringing it from home. Even with the ear protection I felt like we were screaming at the end of the race to hear each other.
If you attend the race I highly suggest packing a cooler for your car with snacks and water. It took us hours to get out of the parking lot after the race. There was an accident on the main freeway so we ended up sitting in the parking lot for hours. All in all it took almost 4 hours to get from the race back to our hotel.
