The river cruise is absolutely amazing! I will say that you are out in the open in the boat and ours did not have a cover. Make sure you have sunglasses with you. I am not sure a hat will stay on when the boat picks up speed.
We were quite pink by the end of the river tour. My poor nose looked like Rudolph but it was so worth it!
When we were boarding the boat we could hear Howler Monkeys in the area. I have to say I was just a little bit excited at the idea of seeing Howler Monkeys. When the boat came around the first turn in the river we were greeted with a group of Howler Monkeys in the trees. They are so much bigger than I expected them to be.
Keep an eye out in the trees above you as you go down the river. We were able to see quite a few large iguanas sunning themselves in the trees.
The tour guide told us that iguanas are a national delicacy and prized for dinner. She said they taste like chicken. I am taking her word for it and have zero plans on tasting iguana.
We passed this boat of cruise passengers heading up stream while we were going downstream. Depending on the tour one starts at Altun Ha and the other starts with the boat tour.
At the end of the river portion of the tour you are in a mangrove swamp area and have the chance to see manatees. We spotted quite a few manatees before heading out onto the open water to Belize City.
The tour boat pulls right up to the port terminal. We had a chance to do a little bit of shopping and exploring before taking the tender back to the cruise ship.
