Have you ever visited a bucket list destination and wished you could extend your trip? That is how we felt about St. Petersburg Russia! I have been dreaming of visiting Russia since I studied Russian in college. If only I could still speak some of it but that faded with age and lack of practice. Our visit to St. Petersburg was amazing!
Make sure to book a cruise with two days in St. Petersburg Russia when you decide to cruise Northern Europe. I am sure by the end of the second day you will be completely exhausted but also have a worn out shutter on your camera. You will most likely have a very welcoming day at sea to recover from three very full days exploring Tallinn, Estonia, then two more days in St. Petersburg. For travelers coming from the US the jet lag will finally catch up and will only add to the fatigue as St. Petersburg is eleven hours ahead from the west coast!
We made the mistake of booking a cruise with only one day in St Petersburg and left with so many things we still want to see. We did however make the most of the day and was on two separate tours. You must have a visa to enter Russia but you do not need a visa if you are on one of the ships organized tours.
Our first tour included spending the day at Catherine’s Palace and afternoon on the Neva River cruise. The tour included lunch and the bus did stop for a few photos at St. Isaacs Cathedral and a quick drive by the Church of Our Saviour on the Spilt Blood. Catherine’s Palace definitely had the WOW factor and we would definitely go again. We came back and barely had long enough to change and head back out for an evening at the ballet. I really enjoyed the ballet and felt like it was the thing to do while in St. Petersburg.
Be prepared that the only currency that anyone will accept is the Russian Ruble. We found this out when we attempted to get something to drink at intermission at the ballet. For the most part people accepted credit cards so don’t feel you need much, besides a few rubles can make a great conversation piece.
We will without a doubt go back to St. Petersburg. There are so many sights we still want to see like the Peterhoff Palace and the Hermitage. Even the subway is a piece of art! Make your trip to St. Petersburg everything you want but spend as much time as possible in this wonderful city.
