We took a Washington State Ferry to Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands to start our weekend adventure. I have to admit one of my favorite parts of visiting the San Juan Islands is taking the ferry.
We took the ferry from Anacortes to Friday Harbor and were able to jump right on the ferry with only a minimal wait. We kept hearing that we needed to be at the ferry dock a couple of hours ahead of time. We showed up about 45 minutes early and were able to make the ferry. There are quite a few Washington State Ferries to Friday Harbor each day.
I am always amazed at how many cars the ferries can fit. It is so easy to drive right on the ferry and relax during the hour or so trip to Friday Harbor.
While on the ferry we explored everything we could and enjoyed standing on deck. The scenery is amazing and such a great reminder of how beautiful Washington State is. Keep an eye out for whales, seals and other wildlife while on the ferry. The day after we got home we saw photos of humpback whales playing next to a Washington State Ferry.
It was a tad bit windy at the front of the ferry. I am really glad I was able to “borrow” Johns jacket from him.
I loaded up on brochures, maps and information on the San Juan Islands before we got off the ferry. It was so nice getting everything we needed for the weekend before we hit the island. I highly suggest picking up a map of the islands. They are not large but it is easy to get turned around and end up on the wrong side of the island.
There were puzzles spread out on tables for everyone to enjoy during the visit. This is the first time I have seen this on a ferry and loved it. It was so fun seeing groups of people working together on the puzzles.
Washington State has a new scenic byway that includes the ferry trips to the San Juan Islands. The San Juan Island Scenic Byway is divided into three segments. The first portion is the marine highway route between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands on the Washington State Ferries, the second portion is a driving tour around San Juan Island and the final portion is a driving tour of Orcas Island.
The ferry fare to the San Juan Islands includes round trip travel, you only have to pay going westbound. There is parking at the terminal if you want to walk onto the ferry and leave your car behind.
