I can't get the quote "Does your house rise up to greet you" out of my head lately.

As I have been looking around our house I realized that it really did not look the way I wanted it to. We moved in a little over a year and a half ago and it does not look like I want it to.

This year I am focusing on making our house a place I want to relax in and enjoy.

The first room I decided to attack/clean was our master bedroom. I want this room to be a relaxing sanctuary that is not cluttered or filled with random stuff.

    Cleaning your mattress

Spread baking soda and a tablespoon of your favorite fabric softener across the bed and let it sit for 1 hour.  This will help kill dust mites and make your mattress smell fresh. I am really hoping this will help with our allergies. I also spread baking soda on the carpet and let it sit for a few hours. The room smells really fresh and clean.

    Wash bed pillow

Do you ever stop to think about what is in/on your pillow? I know it is not something we want to think about but it is probably something we should think about.

I recently read in All You Magazine that 10% of a bed pillow weight after two years of use is composed of dust mites and their droppings.

After reading this I scooped all of our pillows off the bed and headed for the washing machine. Make sure you check your pillow's labels before washing them. I set the washer on a gentle cycle with hot water. I washed two regular size pillows at a time to make sure they had more than enough space in the washer.

Make sure and run the pillows through the rinse cycle twice to get all of the detergents out.  I place the pillows in the dryer with clean new tennis balls on low heat. The tennis balls help the pillows fluff while they are in the dryer.

It may take a couple of cycles of the dryer to get the pillows dry.  If you feel any moisture in your pillows make sure and keep them drying. You can purchase  >Dust Mite & Allergy Control Standard Pillow Case to help keep dust mites out of your pillows.

While I was doing our bedroom deep clean I also wiped down the nightstands, cleaned out the nightstand drawers, wiped down windowsills, washed the inside of the windows, wiped down the bedroom door, rotated our mattress 180 degrees, and dusted the artwork on the walls.

It feels so good to walk into our bedroom and have it sparkling clean. It is now a relaxing sanctuary instead of a dusty mess.

Fabric softeners are full of harmful chemicals. If you have allergies, I strongly urge you to ditch the fabric softeners, dryer sheets and air 'fresheners'.
