    Homemade Grout Cleaner

Published: Jul 31, 2014 · Updated: Dec 13, 2020 by Tammilee · This post may contain affiliate links

Homemade Grout Cleaner! Grout is one of those areas in your home that can be difficult to get clean and since it tends to build up, you often don’t notice it is bad before it gets really bad. You could use bleach on your grout, but often this won’t take care of the problem.

    Homemade Grout Cleaner

Did you know that you have the very best grout cleaner in your cupboards already?

Here is my solution for cleaning grout with ingredients you have at home.

    You will need:

    • Plain Distilled White Vinegar
    • Baking Soda
    • Water
    • Epsom Salt

    Directions

This recipe is really two recipes in one and a two-step process. You should complete both steps even if your grout is not that bad yet, especially in areas of your home that get a lot of moisture. This is because the process will not only clean what is already there but prevent mold, mildew, and other things from making your grout dirty.

To start, mix 1 part Epsom salt, 2 parts baking soda, and 1 part water. You will want to create a paste with this mixture. If it is still too dry, add small amounts of water until it reaches the desired consistency.  Spread it on the grout that needs to be cleaned and allow to sit for around 10-15 minutes.

After that time has passed, use a small brush ( an old toothbrush works well or a grout brush) and work it in circular motions into the grout. This will help loosen up any extra grime that is there. Rinse off the paste well with warm water. Repeat with the paste if your grout is still not as clean as you like it.

Soak a rag in white distilled vinegar and apply it to the clean grout. You can also pour it onto the area and allow it to sit, but depending upon the area your grout is, this may not be practical. This last step is important for the prevention of grime buildup as well as good for removing any hard water deposits that have built up over time.

This cleaner is just pennies to make each time and if you do this regularly, your grout should stay nice and bright.

Some other things you can do to keep your grout clean is to fill a bottle with a spray nozzle with some plain white distilled vinegar and spray after showers.
