Cats of Greece and the Mediterranean

Published: Mar 3, 2015 · This post may contain affiliate links

During our trip to Greece and the Mediterranean, we fell in love with the Cats. They are honestly everywhere and oh so cute. They know just how to look at you to get you to share a scrap of food from dinner. They are friendly and honestly know how to work over tourists to get what they want.

Cats of Greece and the Mediterranean

Our group fell in love with the Cats of Greece and the Mediterranean. I lost track of how many times we stopped to photograph and interact with the cats. Thankfully the entire group loved cats and did not think it was crazy to stop and pet a random cat.

There are cats almost every place we visited in Greece and the Mediterranean.

From the adorable kitten in Rhodes to the cute cats of Mykonos each one pulled at our heartstrings and made us wish we could rescue them all and take them home with us.

I am sure John would not be excited if I brought home a few dozen cats but I would love it.

We learned that cats were brought to many of the archaeological sites to help control rodents.

They have since become their own tourist attraction along with the gorgeous historical sites.

This orange cat was at the Acropolis taking a nap by a cannon as one does.

Did you know we have 6 cats? Learn more about them here.

The photos taken says that the cats all over the Greece are living a wonderful day. Not all the time cats have owners. Many of them roam around the street as if their finding who can save and can give them a tender loving care that will help them to live another year.

I've never been outside the country, I know, I know- but I never knew that cats were such normal occurrence in Greece. Do people have cats for pets too, or do they not need to since they wander the streets as everyone's pets?

I am pretty sure they have cats as pets. I have not asked though to confirm this. The cats are everywhere and so cute. Most of them are used to humans and will let you pet them as you walk by. I love that I can get in a bit of cat time while traveling since I am such a cat person.

How cool is that.. I've never seen so many cats like that before. The fact that wild cats like you pet them is really cool, the kids would love that. My youngest is crazy about cats, not sure why, we dont have any pets ,but boy does he go crazy when he sees one.

First of all, these pictures! The cats are so cute! And, so funny....I was in Italy a couple years ago and there were cats everywhere there too. The climate maybe???

It's interesting that they brought the cats to protect against rodents, and have become a tourist attraction themselves. Very cool that they are friendly and interact well with visitors. They all look well-fed and healthy.

Cute cats. I am more of a dog person personally. However, I think cats take good photos and I bet it was so much fun in Greece. That would be a place I would want to visit one day.

Oh wow, are those fur babies tourists or local? Kidding aside, those are beautiful cats! I love the different poses they made when you snapped the photos! Thanks for taking us with your travel.

I'm pretty sure I just pinned about half of those cats to my Utter Cuteness board, lol. They are all so beautiful! I love cats. And yes, they definitely know how to work a crowd! We have feral kitties outside that definitely learned how to get us to take care of them. Those cats of Greece all look really well fed and healthy!

The cats are just precious and Greece is amazing. I had a cat just like the gray striped on in the photo and I made a video shortly before our neighbors dog sent her to heaven. She had kittens at the time and we had to hand feed them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvvMG9vHg0c). Thanks for sharing your photos and journey. I hope to one day have a new pet.

Oh my goodness I had no idea there were Cats in Greece! I love cats but my husband is DEATHLY allergic. I sadly will have to travel to Greece alone. Your trip looks amazing though and the pictures are breathtaking. My son and I will add Greece to our bucket list. Maybe a cruise destination so we all can go but hubs can stay on the ship 😉

Those cats look really adorable. The eyes are especially amazing! I can imagine them even glowing in the dark. Do those cats have owners are they are just found as stray in the streets of Greece and Mediterranean? They're so clean so I am assuming that someone must properly take care of them.
