How to Dye Coconut Green

We love using dyed coconut to sweet treats. It is the perfect way to decorate cakes and cupcakes. We used green coconut grass in the Easter Rice Krispie Nests we shared earlier this week.

It is such a fun cheap way to add texture and color to baked goods. While this post describes how to dye coconut green you can use this same process for any color you want to make.

I am going to make a rainbow cake decorated with dyed coconut this summer. It would also work great for making a quick and easy Fourth of July cake.

There are so many ways to use this super easy dyed coconut technique.

Don't buy dyed coconut at the grocery store when you can easily make it at home and customize it to the color you want.

Ingredients

  • Shredded Coconut Flakes
  • Green Liquid Food Coloring/food dye

Equipment Needed

  • Gallon Ziploc Plastic Bag
  • Ziploc bag holders
  • Parchment Paper
  • Baking Sheets - We are huge fans of these baking sheets with sides.

We use these bag holders to keep the bag open when adding in the coconut flakes and food coloring. It also helps control the bag so it is harder to spill all over the counter.

I am super clumsy at times and my biggest fear is spreading food coloring all over our white quartz countertops.

How to Dye Coconut Green

Step 1 - Add white coconut needed to a zip loc baggie. Break up the coconut flakes as much as possible so there are not large clumps.

Step 2 - Add in drops of green food coloring. Seal the bag and shake it.

Keep shaking until the dye is evenly spread. If you find that it is not evenly spreading you can add in a teaspoon of water and keep shaking.

Add in additional drops of food coloring until desired color coconut is achieved.

Step 3 - Spread coconut on a parchment lined baking sheet and let it dry before using.

This process can be used for any color of dyed coconut.
