Are you looking for a smooth drink with a bit of a kick? That is how I would describe this Maple Old Fashioned made with Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum. It is smooth, decadent, and pretty darn good.
Maple Old Fashioned
When I received the bottle of Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum I really had to think about what I wanted to make with it. This was my first time mixing with a bourbon oak barrel rum. I wasn't sure how the flavor would be compared to regular Mount Gay Rum. What I found is a bold taste with a nice hint of spice at the end. The Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum has a smooth taste that is not jarring when you drink it.
I have been a fan of Mount Gay Rum ever since we visited their distillery in Barbados. Mount Gay Rum is located across the street from one of the most amazing beaches I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. If you have the chance to visit Barbados I highly highly suggest stopping into the Mount Gay Rum visitor center. The tour shows you the history of Mount Gay Rum and offers you a lovely tasting also.
The new Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum is very different from other Mount Gay Rums we have tried. This new rum is finished in a charred bourbon oak barrel. The Black Barrel Rum is being released as part of Mount Gays 310th anniversary! Yes you read that right! Mount Gay has been producing rum for 310 years! They are the world's oldest refined rum. They have paperwork from 1703 talking about Mount Gay Rum. I am pretty sure in over 300 years they have figured out how to be pretty darn great rum makers.
All of Mount Gay Rums are made from a blend of single column and double copper pot distillates and matured in toasted oak barrels. The new Black Barrel Rum has a higher portion of double distillates and is finished in charred bourbon oak barrels. Master Blender Allen Smith hand selects the rum that is used for Black Barrel Rum.

If you want a fancy cherry we love Luxardo Cherries. They are a bit pricey but dang they are delicious.
This is a really easy drink to make. I combined the Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, Maple Syrup, and bitter in a shaker and swirled it around to combine it. I poured the mixture into the martini glass and you are ready to go!
I hope you enjoy the Mount Gay Black Barrel as much as we did. I truly enjoyed mixing a great cocktail with the Black Barrel Rum.
