Sonic Ocean Water Recipe

One of my husband's employees LOVES Ocean Water at Sonic! She will drive 90 minutes into Spokane to get it every chance she gets.

I thought it would be fun to make a Copycat Ocean Water that she could make at home. This recipe is really easy to make and takes pantry basics plus coconut extract.

All you need is a few minutes and you can have a great bright blue Ocean Water drink at home.

If you love Sonic check out these other copycat recipes we have shared Sonic Cherry Limeade, coconut cream pie shake, and Peanut Butter Milkshake.

What is Ocean Water at Sonic?

The Ocean Water at Sonic is pretty much a blue coconut Sprite. The drink has coconut extract along with Sprite mixed together. The addition of simple syrup makes it sweet and a bit of blue food coloring gives it the signature look you are used to.

This kid-friendly blue drink is incredibly popular!

Ocean Water Cocktail

We love making Ocean Waters on hot summer days. They are the perfect refreshing drink. One afternoon my Husband John and I looked at each other and it felt like a lightbulb popped up between us saying ding ding ding. LOL!

This is how Ocean Water Cocktail was created. We realized that the drink would be epic with the addition of .....Malibu Coconut Rum!

Adding Malibu Coconut Rum makes this fast-food drink favorite into an adult summer cocktail that rocks!  You can enjoy happy hour at home with this epic summer drink.

Sonic Ocean Water Ingredients

  • Coconut Extract
  • Sprite
  • Blue Food Coloring
  • Sugar
  • Water

Bonus - Swedish Fish, Blue Shark Gummies, Tropical drink umbrellas.

Coconut Extract - You can find coconut extract in most grocery stores baking aisles. If your local grocery store does not have coconut extract you can order some on Amazon. If you plan to make Ocean Water drinks frequently I would buy the larger bottle to save money long term.

Blue food coloring - I use basic food coloring for this recipe. The drops work great compared to gel-type coloring.

Water and Sugar - you are using this to make a simple syrup. You can also buy premade simple syrup but it is super easy to make.

Sprite - You can use any lemon-lime soda you have.

Equipment Needed

Microwave Safe Bowl - I use a small pyrex measuring glass that is easy to pour from and microwave safe.

Fish Bowl - I love the look of Ocean Water served in a fishbowl it just makes it more festive. You can easily serve this in a regular glass, mason jar, or water bottle.

If you are making this blue drink for a birthday party or event you can get plastic fishbowl glasses on amazon.

Paper Straws - If you are serving this for a party or want a fun pop of color using fun paper straws works great.

Recipe Tips

If you are not a fan of food dyes you can easily skip the blue food coloring and have enjoy a clear drink. The taste will be the same it will just be clear.

I love floating Swedish Fish in this drink to make it even more festive. Add in some tropical drink umbrellas and you feel like you are on a tropical vacation in your backyard.

To make a Sonic Ocean Water Slush you can blend everything but the sprite and some ice together. Make sure you don't blend the carbonated sprite.

If you love the coconut flavor you can add in an additional half teaspoon of coconut extract.

To save calories you can use Diet Sprite in this recipe. You can also change out the white sugar for a sugar substitute. Amazon sells sugar-free simple syrup that can be used.
