Crockpot Monkey Bread

Have you ever made a recipe and wondered why it has taken you so long to make it? That is how I feel about this Crockpot Monkey Bread.

Since we first made this recipe in 2013 more than 1 million people have made this recipe! That is so crazy cool and hard to imagine!

Crock Pot Monkey Bread Recipe close up

For some reason, I always think that Monkey Bread is going to take hours and hours to prepare. Making Monkey Bread in the Crock-Pot is so crazy easy!

Fair warning your house is going to smell crazy amazing when you make this recipe. I kept checking the timer for the Crock Pot Monkey Bread to be done. I was so ready to dive in and try it.

We had all of the ingredients needed for this recipe in the fridge and pantry.

One thing I love about making Crockpot Monkey Bread is the pieces are so soft and delicious. Sometimes when I make monkey bread in the oven the outside pieces seem dry and crunchy by the time it is done. By using the slow cooker the steam emitted from the dough keeps all of the pieces soft and chewy.

This slow cooker monkey bread is perfect for holidays especially Christmas! You can set up the crockpot to start cooking before opening gifts and when you need a sweet treat break it will be ready to go!

I tend to make this in the evening when I know we are going to want a dessert while watching tv but I don't want to deal with cooking/baking something that takes time. This easy recipe takes minutes to prepare and then I can curl up and relax while the slow cooker does all the work.

Crock Pot Monkey Bread Recipe

Ingredients to make Crockpot Monkey Bread

  • Refrigerator Biscuits
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Butter
  • Sugar

How to make Crockpot Monkey Bread

Cut biscuits into quarters with kitchen shears

Refrigerator biscuit dough in melted butter in a blue bowl for crockpot monkey bread

Dip biscuit pieces into melted butter until it is coated on all sides

refrigerator biscuit dough coated in butter in a bowl of cinnamon and brown sugar for slow cooker monkey bread

Put buttered biscuit pieces into the bowl of cinnamon and brown sugar and fully coat the pieces

Crockpot Monkey Bread with cinnamon brown sugar over it ready to cook in the slow cooker.

Toss pieces into your Crock-Pot until you have all of the pieces layered in the crockpot. I poured the extra brown sugar mixture over the top of my pieces. Because really you can't have enough brown sugar and cinnamon.

If you have a hot spot in your crockpot try to keep the dough from touching it. I have one spot in my crockpot that gets a lot hotter than the rest of it. I try to push the dough to the other side so it doesn't get to hot.

Cook on low for 2 hours, check to see if pieces are done. I rotated a few of the top pieces to the bottom to make sure everything was cooked all the way through. The pieces on the edges cooked faster than the pieces on the top.

You can serve this slow cooker monkey bread directly from the crockpot or plate it on a platter or large bowl. The pieces will be hot when they just get done cooking! Make sure you give pieces a few minutes to cool down so the hot sugar doesn't burn anyone.

Recipe Tips

Make sure to spray the slow cooker with cooking spray so the biscuits do not stick to the crockpot.

If you want to make this even more decadent you can drizzle cream cheese icing over it but be prepared it will be super sweet.

You can use slow cooker inserts if you want to make clean up easier. Another option is to line the crockpot with parchment paper.

If I double the recipe, should I cook it for the same time or a bit longer?
Have you ever doubled it? Or maybe even more?
    Thanks

We have not tried doubling the recipe. I am not sure how long it would take to cook.

I cooked on low for about an hour 45 min. Biscuits were still very doughy. Turned it on high for about at hour and came out okay. Wish I had cooked on high from the start.

What in the world did I do wrong? I cooked it for hours and it was a pasty, soggy mess! Should I have cooked with the crock lid off? I wonder, because the build up of steam and condensation had no where to go, so how does it dry out enough? I have enough ingredients to try again, but I'm hesitant. Can you help?

Sounds like fun but I have noidea what the biscuits are or where to buy them in Australia. Is there some equivalent available here? I can't see from the picture just what type of biscuit they are.

Hi Lainey, They are made with a tube of refrigerated biscuits. These were pillsbury I think. I am not sure if they are sold in Australia. I have not been in Australia in over 10 years sadly.

I tried making this recipe today, and it's been cooking for five hours now, still not done. In the future I'll probably just stick with making my monkey bread in the oven. The concept for this is very good, though.

I ended up making it. What a tasty treat! I didn't feel like going to the grocery store for one or two apples so I skipped them. I think a granny smith would help cut the sweetness a bit, and give it a nice flavour. Thanks again for the recipe.

So you take ready made dough and put some sugar on it?
That, my dear, is not cooking. That is ASSEMBLY. THAT is why is only took a few minutes.

You might as well go and BUY the Monkeybread and stick it in the oven for 5 minutes,

I'm sure this recipe wasn't meant for advanced culinarians such as yourself. The ASSEMBLY required is simple enough for the novice cook & gives them the opportunity to utilize their own substitutions if they so desire, instead of just buying a ready-made product. It might even inspire them to try a more difficult recipe.
