Mexican Mule

We love this twist on a Classic Moscow Mule! This recipe uses tequila instead of vodka to make a refreshing drink.

You can use your favorite tequila for this recipe. Since it is mixing with lime juice and ginger beer you do not have to use high-end tequila unless you want it.

If you have been wondering what is a Mexican Mule don't worry this recipe has you covered. You may also see this cocktail listed as a Tequila Mule.

For a different twist, you can make an Irish Mule with Irish whiskey. You can also make a Kentucky Mule using Kentucky Bourbon. We have a ton of Moscow Mule Variations!

Ingredients

This is a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you'll need to make an epic Mexican Mule Recipe! Specific measurements and step by step instructions are included in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Tequila - You can use Anejo tequila or reposado tequila depending on the flavor you prefer. Change it up and use Mezcal for a smoky flavor.

Lime Juice - If you don't have any fresh limes you can use Rose's Lime Juice or another pre-made lime juice. We always suggest using fresh lime juice to get the absolute best lime flavor in your cocktail.

Ginger Beer - If you don't like the flavor of spicy Ginger Beer you can also use ginger ale but it is not as spicy as ginger beer. Make this with your favorite bottle of ginger beer. Popular brands include Fever Tree, Bundaberg, Goslings, or Q Ginger Beer.

Garnish - Lime Wedge

Optional - sliced jalapenos for a spicy kick, add mint for the garnish.

Some recipes add simple syrup or agave syrup but we do not add this extra sweetness to the cocktail. If you want a bit of extra sweetness you can also add in a bit of Triple Sec or Cointreau which also adds in orange citrus flavor.

Equipment needed

Copper Moscow Mule Mug - We highly suggest putting your Copper Mule Mugs in the refrigerator for a few hours before you make this Mexican Moscow Mule Cocktail. If you don't have a copper mug you can also serve this in a rocks glass or any glass really. Just adapt the ginger beer to fit into the glass you are using.

How to Make a Mexican Mule

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post but here's a quick version.

Fill Copper Mug with ice cubes

Add in tequila, lime juice, and top with ginger beer.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Recipe Tips

We store our copper mugs in the refrigerator so they are nice and cold when we make these Mexican Moscow Mules.

You can add more or less ginger beer depending on how much you want to taste the ginger versus the Tequila.

Do NOT shake this recipe in a cocktail shaker! You will lose all of the ginger beer carbonation and possibly make a mess.

You do not need to stir this Tequila Mule Cocktail. You want to preserve as many of the bubbles as you can from the ginger beer.

If you would like to make a spicy Mexican Mule Cocktail you can muddle a couple of jalapeno slices in the bottom of the copper mule mug and then add in a splash of ginger beer. Then follow the recipe as it is written below.

This is not a cocktail you want to make in advance of serving it. It is best to make this right when you are serving it so you get the best mix of flavors and bubbles from the ginger beer.
