Copycat McDonald's Shamrock Shake

You don't have to worry about this fast-food chain dessert only being available for a limited time when you make this recipe at home. This Shamrock Shake Recipe takes minutes to prepare and most of that is pulling the ingredients out of the fridge, freezer, and pantry.

This fan-favorite green shake dessert tastes amazing. You can skip the drive-through and make this at home in less than 5 minutes.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Shamrock Shake in 2020 Mcdonald's created an Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. I am still working on making one of these at home but I will say a few crushed up Oreos cookie pieces blended into this shake tastes amazing.

Don't miss our McDonald's Sweet Tea Recipe for a refreshing drink.

Ingredients

  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Milk
  • Mint Extract
  • Green Food Coloring

Optional - Whipped Cream, Maraschino Cherry, and Sprinkles

Vanilla Ice Cream - I try to use a good Classic Vanilla or Vanilla Bean Ice Cream when I make this recipe. I had French Vanilla in the freezer when I went to finally photograph this shake and it worked great. McDonald's uses a vanilla soft serve but I haven't convinced my husband that we need a soft-serve ice cream maker in the house quite yet. Though I have tried.

Milk - I use whatever Milk we have in the house but whole milk will give you the creamiest shake if you have it. Start with half the milk and add in more until you get the consistency that you like.

Mint Extract - You can find Mint Extract in the baking section of your local grocery store or purchase it online from Amazon. Please make sure you use Mint Extract to get the flavor just right.

Green Food Coloring - I use basic grocery store food coloring nothing too extravagant for this recipe. I like to start with a few drops and then add in more until I get the color I am looking for. It is easier to add them in slowly versus getting a color you were not hoping for.

Shamrock Shake Cocktail

You can easily turn this copycat McDonalds Shamrock Shake into a boozy milkshake perfect for an adult St. Patrick's Day party. I would suggest adding in creme de menthe and lower the amount of mint extract used. You could also use a whipped cream vodka, vanilla vodka, or any liquor of your choosing.

Bailey's Irish Cream would also taste fantastic!

Equipment

Blender - We are big fans of the Ninja Blender. You can use any blender that is strong enough to mix all of the ingredients.

Soda fountain-type glasses - I love the look of these soda fountain glasses. They just make the milkshake look even more decadent.

Measuring cups and spoons

Paper Milkshake Straws - I love the look of a cute paper straw when making a festive drink.

Recipe Tips

You can make this a Shamrock Chocolate Chip Shake by mixing in a handful of mini chocolate chips.

Feel free to decorate the inside of your glass with a bit of chocolate syrup.

This green-colored mint-flavored shake can be adapted to your favorite flavors. I prefer how it tastes with mint extract compared to peppermint extract but feel free to try both and see which one you prefer. The Peppermint Extract makes the shake taste more like a candy cane.

If you are not a fan of food coloring you can leave it out and have a white shamrock shake.

We normally grabbed canned whipped topping from the grocery store for this milkshake. You can definitely make your own whipped cream.

You can make a vegan version of this shake by using Coconut Milk Ice Cream and Coconut Milk or other non-dairy alternatives.
