We are huge fans of dump cake recipes! They are so easy to make and always taste amazing.

I try to keep the ingredients on hand just in case we want to whip up a dump cake for dessert.

We have made pumpkin dump cake, lemon dump cake, apple spice dump cake, cherry dump cake, and we are working on a peach dump cake.

Easy dump cake recipes make life so sweet and easy! I love that you can take a box of cake mix and turn it into the perfect sweet treats.

During the summer when we don't feel like turning the oven on we make slow cooker dump cakes. All the sweet dessert goodness without the heat in the house.

The only thing you need to do is evenly distribute the ingredients, bake, and enjoy!

    Ingredients

This is a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you'll need to make an epic Caramel Apple Dump Cake! Specific measurements and step-by-step instructions are included in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    • Apple Pie Filling
    • Yellow Cake Mix
    • Caramel Bits
    • Butter

Optional Toppings - aย  scoop of Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, cinnamon, chopped pecans or your favorite nuts.

Cake Mix - We use a yellow cake mix but you can easily substitute and make this with a spice cake mix or a white cake mix. A different cake mix will change up the flavor so make sure it pairs well with caramel and apples. Check out all of our Yellow Cake Mix Recipes

Caramel Bits - If you don't have caramel bits you can cut caramel squares into half and use those or pour caramel sauce over the apples.

Apples - We used canned apple pie filling but you could use fried apples or homemade apple pie filling. If you decide to use fresh apples make sure they are chopped into small cubes so they bake evenly.

    Equipment Needed

One thing I love about dump cakes is there is no need to use a mixing bowl or extra equipment unless you want to.

    Non-stick spray

Measuring glass/microwave safe bowl - To melt the butter. You can also do this on the stovetop in a saucepan.

    9 x 13 Baking Dish - Also known as a 3 quart casserole dish.

Microwave Silicone cover - I swear by these lid covers to help prevent butter splatters when melting butter in the microwave. I have had way too many butter explosions while baking. These lid covers help keep the butter in the bowl and not on the roof of your microwave.

Heat resistant potholdersย - A couple of years ago, we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on, and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then, we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.

How to make Caramel Apple Dump Cake

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here's a quick version.

Make sure to preheat the oven.

    Bake until golden brown.

How to serve Caramel Apple Dump Cake

This dump cake can be enjoyed warm or cold. Top it with whipped cream or a great vanilla ice cream.

Change it up and try it with butter pecan, maple walnut, or cinnamon ice cream. Drizzle caramel sauce over the top for extra decadence.

We enjoy this cake the next day and I am going to admit I might have had some of it for breakfast the day after making it.

    How to store?

Store the dump cake covered at room temperature for a day or two. If you plan to keep it longer store it in the refrigerator.

    Can you freeze dump cakes?

I would not freeze it if you don't have to. The texture will most likely change after freezing. We have not tried freezing a dump cake.

    Slow Cooker Instructions

This recipe can easily be adapted to bake in your favorite crockpot.

Make sure to spray the crockpot with non-stick cooking spray to make clean up a lot easier.

Assemble the same as you would in a baking dish. Cover with the slow cooker lid, cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours.

Vegetarian Option - This recipe is vegetarian.

Vegan Option โ€“Can this recipe be vegan. Yes, make sure to use a vegan friendly cake mix, caramel, and vegan butter.

Gluten Free - Can you make Gluten Free Dump Cakes? Yes, try a gluten free cake mix, also check the ingredients on any apple pie filling and caramels.

Smaller Serving Size โ€“ This recipe is hard to make smaller but you could measure half of the cake mix and use one can of apples instead of 2.

Larger Group/More servings โ€“ This recipe can be doubled and served in two baking dishes or in the slow cooker.

    Recipe Tips

We use two cans of apples but this can be made with one.
