A classic Moscow Mule Cocktail is one of our favorite recipes. We wanted to share a fun twist on this classic and share this Irish Mule Cocktail.

It is the perfect combination of Irish Whiskey and Ginger Beer.ย  These would be great for Saint Patrick's Day or any day you want a whiskey cocktail.

This recipe uses Irish Whiskey instead of vodka like you would find in a classic Moscow Mule.

We love Moscow Mules! They are so easy to make and always taste so refreshing and amazing. While these are perfect for St. Patrick's Day I highly suggest making them any day of the year.

Did you know you can also make a Kentucky Mule with Kentucky Bourbon? Or maybe a Mexican Mule with Tequila.

We have been having so much fun making Moscow Mule variations. The mule is part of a collection/family of cocktails called bucks. These are drinks made with ginger beer or ale, citrus juice, and a base liquor.

This Irish Mule Drink can also be called a whiskey buck or an Irish Buck.

This cocktail is also called a Jameson Mule after the Jameson Irish Whiskey used in it. We have even seen it called a Dublin Mule

While we didn't get to enjoy these during our last trip to Ireland I can say they are now one of our favorite easy cocktails to make.

To help you celebrate as if you are in Dublin for St. Patrick's Day we put together a big list of Irish Toasts!

May you never lie, steal, cheat or drink.
But if you must lie, lie in each otherโ€™s arms.
If you must steal, steal kisses.
If you must cheat, cheat death.
And if you must drink, drink with us, your friends

Irish Mule ingredients, Jameson Irish whiskey, fever tree ginger beer, and limes

    Ingredients

This is a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you'll need to make an epic Irish Mule! Specific measurements and step by step instructions are included in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Irish Whiskey - We use Jameson Irish Whiskey but you can use any Irish Whiskey you have. Because the Irish Whiskey is mixed with Ginger Beer you don't need to use a high-end whiskey. You can use an economy whiskey or whatever you have available. The difference between Irish Whiskey and American Whiskey is Irish Whiskey is made with barley as opposed to being made with corn, rye or wheat.

Ginger Beer - If you don't like the flavor of spicy Ginger Beer you can also use ginger ale

Lime Juice - If you don't have any fresh limes you can use Rose's Lime Juice or another premade lime juice.

Garnish - Sprig of Mint leaves, lime wedge or slices

You can muddle in mint leaves if you like the additional mint flavor. We tend to leave it out since we like the combination of fresh lime juice with the ginger beer and Irish Whiskey.

    Equipment

Copper Moscow Mule Mug - We highly suggest putting your Copper Mule Mugs in the refrigerator for a few hours before you make this Irish Moscow Mule Cocktail. If you don't have a copper mug you can also serve this in a rocks glass or any glass really. Just adapt the ginger beer to fit into the glass you are using.

Citrus Juicer - A handheld citrus reamer works great for getting fresh lime juice.

OXO angled jiggers - these are our go-to measuring tools for cocktails.

Bar Spoon - Give the Jameson Mule a quick stir and it is ready to enjoy!

How to make an Irish Mule

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post but here's a quick version.

Fill copper mug glass with ice

Pour in Irish Whiskey, Lime Juice, and top with Ginger Beer.

Garnish with fresh mint leaves and lime wheel. Enjoy

    Recipe Variations

Substitutions - You can use any brand of Irish Whiskey for this cocktail. We tend to use Jameson since we always have some in the house.

Vegetarian Option - Most ginger beers are vegetarian. If you are curious about a specific brand I would double check. I saw one brand Crabbies Ginger Beer listed as having a fish agent in it.

Vegan Option โ€“ Most ginger beers are vegan, except the brand I mentioned in the vegetarian section right above here. Irish Whiskey is vegan.

Gluten Free - Irish Whiskey and Ginger Beer are gluten-free,

Alcohol Free/Mocktail Option โ€“ Ginger beer is alcohol free. Substitute non-alcoholic Irish Whisky to make this into a mocktail.

Larger Group/More servings โ€“ You can make this Irish Mule recipe in a pitcher and have it ready to serve your guests. Simply change the serving size in the recipe card below to the amount that you need/want to make.

    Recipe Tips

You can add more or less ginger beer depending on how much you want to taste the ginger versus the Irish Whiskey.

Feel free to change up this recipe with more or less of any ingredient to find your perfect flavor.

Don't forget to add ice to your Moscow mule mug to get the perfect cold cocktail.

I highly suggest trying different Ginger Beer brands until you find the one you love. We tend to use Fever Tree but have heard amazing things about Bundaberg Ginger Beer.

If you are hosting a party you can easily set up a Moscow Mule area/table. Put out a bucket of ice, Irish Whiskey and Vodka, Limes, Lime Juice, and mint springs, and let your guests create their own perfect Mule.

Printable recipe card instructions are below.
