We love making cake mix cookies and jazzing them up for the holiday season. Adding eggnog feels like it makes everything perfect for the Christmas holiday.

You can jazz up this eggnog cookie recipe with your favorite holiday spices, eggnog-flavored frosting, or a bit of powdered sugar over the top of them.

If you love this beloved dairy-based holiday beverage, we have you covered with many epic eggnog recipes. Our favorites include Eggnog Cake, Eggnog Pie, Eggnog French Toast, and Eggnog Whipped Cream.

This recipe is just a few of the Eggnog Recipes we have on the website. Just search Eggnog, and you will find a vast selection.

We are working on sharing many sweet treats perfect for this holiday season!

Eggnog Cookie ingredients white cake mix, vanilla, ground nutmeg, eggnog, eggs, butter on a silver baking sheet

    Ingredients

This is a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you'll need to make Eggnog Cookies! Specific measurements and step by step instructions are included in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    • White Cake Mix
    • Unsalted Butter
    • Eggs
    • Eggnog (homemade or store bought)
    • Nutmeg
    • Vanilla Extract

Optional - Sprinkle tops of cookies with ground cinnamon

One of the best things about making eggnog cookies with a cake mix is not having to measure out all of the dry ingredients. The all purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and other ingredients are already measured out saving you time during the busy holiday season.

    Eggnog Glaze

We like to top our cookies with an eggnog glaze made with eggnog, butter, and powdered sugar.

You can add in a teaspoon ground nutmeg or rum extract if you want to add extra flavor.

Whisk together 2 cups powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons butter, and 3 tablespoons eggnog until you reach the desired consistency.

    Equipment Needed

    • Measuring Cup/Teaspoons/Tablespoons
    • Wooden Spoon/Spatula
    • Large Bowl: We are big fans of this glass batter bowl with a handle. It makes it easy to mix ingredients and keeps the mixing bowl steady on the counter.
    • Medium Cookie Scoop: Youโ€™ll need one to scoop the dough onto the cookie sheets and ensure every cookie is the same size.
    • Parchment Paper:ย  I love using parchment paper to line baking sheets and make clean-up a breeze. If you are not using parchment paper, you will want to spritz non-stick cooking spray on your baking sheet to help the cookies not stick or use silicone mats.
    • Baking Sheets: We are huge fans of these baking sheets with sides. You don't have to worry; you will remove the cookies from the oven and have them slide right off.
    • Heat-Resistant Potholders: A couple of years ago, we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on, and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully, we walked by the kitchen, saw the smoke, and got it out ourselves. Since then, we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.
    • Cooling Rack: A cooling wire rack is a great way to cool down fresh-from-the-oven cookies.ย

    How to make Eggnog Cookies

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post but here's a quick version.

    Don't forget to Preheat oven

Wet ingredients in a glass bowl for eggnog cake mix cookies

Step 1 - Whisk together butter, eggs, ground nutmeg, vanilla extract, and eggnog.

Eggnog Cookie dough in a glass bowl

Step 2 - Gently mix in dry cake mix until well mixed. Make sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl to get all ingredients combined.

We do not use a stand mixer when we make this recipe. We find using a spatula or wooden spoon works great.

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: This holiday cookie recipe is make-ahead-friendly! Prepare the dough, store it in an airtight container in the fridge, and bake within four days.

Storage: Store leftover cookies in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy them within three to four days.

Freezing/How to Freeze Eggnog Cookies: You can freeze these Eggnog Cookies for up to three months! Once theyโ€™ve cooled, freeze them for a few hours or overnight on a covered baking sheet. When completely frozen, transfer them to a Ziploc bag or freezer-safe container. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.

    Recipe Variations

Substitutions: We use unsalted butter for our Eggnog Cookies, but weโ€™ve seen other recipes using salted butter. Hereโ€™s a great rundown on using salted and unsalted butter in baking.

Vegetarian Option: This holiday dessert recipe is vegetarian!

Vegan Option: Use a vegan white cake mix and plant-based butter, egg, and eggnog substitutes to make these cookies vegan.

Gluten-Free: Use a gluten-free white cake mix to make this recipe gluten-free. Eggnog is typically gluten-free but check for a gluten-free label if you are highly sensitive and want to avoid cross-contamination.

Alcohol-Free Option: Swap the eggnog with a boozy eggnog for an adult-only version! Weโ€™ve also seen recipes that add bourbon or brandy to the cookie glaze.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes 24 servings. Scale it up or down to your desired yield.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 8 grams of sugar per serving. Use a sugar-free boxed cake mix and eggnog to make it sugar-free.
