Angel food cake mix, food coloring, and a measuring glass with water on a white counter

    Ingredients Needed

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make an epic Red, White, and Blue Angel Food Cake! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

    • Angel Food Cake Mix
    • Water
    • Red and Blue Gel Food Coloringย

Optional garnish/topping - Cool whip, fresh berries

    Equipment Needed

    • Three Mixing Bowls
    • 1-Cup Measuring Cup
    • Spatula
    • Bundt Cake Pan
    • Serrated Knife (to cute the cake)

How to make a Patriotic Angel Food Cake

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here's a quick version.

    Preheat oven to 350ยฐF.

Mix the angel food cake mix and water in a mixing bowl.

Divide the angel food cake batter into two additional bowls. You should have three bowls of batter in total.

Three glass bowls with cake batter, two of the bowls have swirls of color in them.

Glass bowls with white, blue, and red batter in them on a white counter

Add red gel food coloring to one bowl of batter until combined, then add blue gel food coloring to another bowl of batter until combined.

Red cake batter in a Bundt pan

Pour the red batter into the bottom of the Bundt pan.

White cake batter in a Bundt Pan

Pour the white batter slowly over the red batter.

Blue cake batter in a Bundt Pan

Pour the blue batter over the white batter, covering it as much as possible.

    Bake.

Multi colored Angel food cake on a white plate next to a bowl of blueberries and strawberries, plus a stack of plates with forks.

Remove the cake from the Bundt pan and cool thoroughly before slicing. You can ice it, top it with powdered sugar, or leave the outside plain and let the inside be a surprise.

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: We donโ€™t suggest preparing the cake batter beforehand. Angel food cake batter is delicate and may deflate if made too far ahead of baking.

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days or in the fridge for up to five days.

Freezing/How to Freeze: Freeze leftovers in an airtight, freezer-safe container and enjoy within three months. You can freeze them whole or individually sliced.

How to Reheat: Angel food cake is delicate and can remain at room temperature since it does not contain dairy. We recommend enjoying it from the fridge or at room temperature.

    Recipe Variations

    Substitutions:

This recipe uses red and blue food coloring to make this cake patriotic for the Fourth of July. However, you can change the colors if you make it for another holiday that calls for different colors, such as red and green, for Christmas.

Vegetarian Option: This colorful angel food cake is vegetarian if you use vegetarian food coloring without animal ingredients. Luckily, most food coloring brands at stores are plant-based.

Vegan Option: Use a vegan angel food cake mix to make this Red, White, and Blue Angel Food Cake vegan. Traditional angel food cake mix contains egg whites.

Gluten-Free: Look for gluten-free labels on your angel food cake mix and gel food coloring to make this recipe safe for a gluten-free diet.

Smaller Serving Size: Use mini Bundt pans and follow the recipe instructions for each pan to make mini Patriotic Angel Food Cakes.

Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes eight servings and adjusts quickly to more servings. Adjust the slider in the recipe card to the number of servings you need, planning time to bake multiple cakes as required and as oven space permits.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 35 grams of sugar per serving. To make it sugar-free, use sugar-free angel food cake mix and gel food coloring.

Tips for the Best Red, White, and Blue Angel Food Cake

    • The batter will shift in the pan, making each piece unique and fun.
    • If you don't want to layer the batter, add each batter one spoonful or cupful at a time until you have a mosaic of batter to bake.
    • We like to serve this red, white, and blue layered angel food cake with whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries.
    • Be prepared for every piece to look a little different. It is best not to expect the perfect layers.
