Grocery stores have celebrated National Strawberry Day, which takes place on February 27, since 2013.

Here are some fun facts about the juicy red fruit we all know and love:

    • There are over 600 strawberry varieties.
    • It’s no surprise that National Strawberry Day falls during the month of love, as strawberries are a known aphrodisiac. Doesn’t that make chocolate-covered strawberries sound a lot sweeter?
    • Not all strawberries are bright red. Other less common varieties are white, yellow, and pink.
    • Americans consume an average of eight pounds of strawberries each year.
    • Strawberry seeds are located on the exterior of the fruit.
    • California produces 80 percent of the American strawberry harvest.
    • According to California Strawberries a serving of 8 strawberries fulfills the recommended value of Vitamin C for an entire day!

Strawberry season runs from May to July, and many grocery stores even offer specials around National Strawberry Day that encourage stocking up.

Consider freezing your own while strawberries are in season. Frozen strawberries can be substituted where fresh ones are called for and are the easiest way to ensure you always have some fruit on hand to experiment with.

If you live near any strawberry farms, you can even consider picking your own to take home. We suggest setting aside some fresh ones to use right away, then freezing the rest to let your bounty last.

Our favorite recipes with strawberries include strawberry pie, spinach & strawberry salad, strawberry cheesecake, strawberry sauce, strawberry cobbler, strawberry cream cheese frosting, and so many strawberry dessert recipes I could bake for hours.

Some mornings we drop chopped fresh berries in our Greek yogurt for breakfast.

Strawberry fluff salad in a white bowl with cut strawberries for garnish

    Strawberry Fluff Salad

Easy Strawberry Fluff Salad Recipe is perfect for family dinner to holiday events. This quick and easy Jello Salad takes minutes to prepare and tastes amazing.

    Ghost strawberries on parchment paper

    Strawberry Ghosts

Whether coated in white chocolate or vanilla almond bark, these adorable strawberry ghosts are frightfully wonderful to eat.

We figured a fruit-based dessert was a refreshing departure from our usual Halloween sweets rotation, which generally includes cookies and sweet treats. Did we mention they look scary good on a Halloween dessert platter or as part of a spooky romantic dinner?

Strawberry Poke Cake text printed over a slice of strawberry cake

    Strawberry Poke Cake

Poke cake gets its name from the holes poked in it after baking, usually using the end of a wooden spoon.

In our recipe, strawberry Jello and Cool Whip topping are layered to fill these holes. The cake is then refrigerated to allow it to stabilize. For a twist, you can swap Cool Whip for any topping or frosting you enjoy, including chocolate.

    Strawberry Champagne Cocktail

Ingredients: Rosé Champagne, Strawberry Simple Syrup, Sliced Strawberries, Crushed Ice

Strawberry Lemonade Cookies text printed over yellow and pink cookies on a wire rack

Although strawberry isn’t the most common cocktail flavor, this bubbly berry drink uses Monin Strawberry Syrup to infuse blush rosé with sweet strawberry goodness. This pretty cocktail is served in a champagne flute, making it the perfect libation for New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, or ladies’ night.

    Strawberry Lemonade Cookies

This recipe, which uses a blend of lemon and strawberry cake mixes, is inspired by our copycat recipe for Red Robin Freckled Lemonade. To make crinkle cookies, roll the dough balls in powdered sugar before baking them in the oven.

Strawberry Bruschetta on a slice of toast with ricotta cheese on a white plate

    Strawberry Bruschetta Appetizer

We happened upon this recipe the year we visited the strawberry forms in California.

Fresh strawberries, refreshing mint, and a rich blend of ricotta and goat cheese come together for a light brunch appetizer or anytime snack.

For a lighter version, replace the two kinds of cheese with soft Italian mascarpone. This recipe post also has guidance on the proper way to clean strawberries.

You can spread this on your morning toast for a great breakfast.

Crockpot Strawberry Jam text printed over a glass jar with jam and fresh strawberries

    Crock Pot Strawberry Jam

Thanks to my dear Mom, I got the push I needed to continue making jams and jellies, including this one. I was sold once she suggested I make this jam Crock Pot style. The half cup of Riesling used to make this Crock Pot Strawberry Jam imparts subtle wine notes, even after the alcohol is cooked away.

    Strawberry Daiquiri Jello Shots

Ingredients: Strawberry Jell-O, Malibu Coconut Rum, Water

Let these whipped cream-topped rum and strawberry daiquiri shots be part of your Galentine’s Day or bachelorette festivities. These fun-sized boozy bites are shaped using ice cube trays and look great served on a platter. Although I’m happily married and wouldn’t trade it for the world, I wish I had these during the days I spent V-Day mixing cocktails and celebrating single life with the girls.

Strawberry basil cocktail in a glass with a sliced lime and strawberries

    Strawberry Basil Lemonade Cocktail

Ingredients: Smirnoff Strawberry Sorbet Light Vodka, Diet Lemonade, Fresh Basil

This strawberry basil lemonade is the perfect down-home drink for the summer months. The muddled basil and fresh strawberries floating around the glass look cute, especially when the cocktail is served with a fun paper straw.

    Make Ahead Freezer Strawberry Margaritas

Ingredients: Fresh or Frozen Strawberries, Crushed Ice, Tequila, Fresh Lime Juice, White Sugar

I inherited this make-ahead mason jar margarita recipe from my mom, who proves that maybe moms know best. You’ll love knowing that you’re only a freezer door away from a luscious strawberry margarita.

While our version is scratch-made using a blender, you can use a margarita mix if you want a shortcut and flavor boost.

Strawberry milkshakes with whipped cream and fresh strawberries in shake glasses

    The Easiest Homemade Strawberry Milkshake

We first made this for John’s nephew during a blazing hot Spokane summer that reached over 105 degrees. This strawberry soda fountain classic requires only four ingredients - vanilla ice cream, milk, strawberries, and sugar - and five minutes of prep time.

For more strawberry goodness, use strawberry ice cream instead of vanilla ice cream.

Top your milkshake with whipped cream, swirl chocolate sauce inside your glass before serving, or both. We won’t judge!

    Easter Carrot Strawberries!

These elegant Easter carrot strawberries are low-effort and high-reward - in other words, our favorite kind of recipe. Adjust the levels of red and yellow food coloring to your desired shade of orange.

    Strawberry Brie Braided Crescent Appetizer

Sweet strawberry jam and creamy brie mingle and melt in this Pillsbury crescent roll appetizer. We used Smucker’s then-new Fruit & Honey strawberry jam, but feel free to use your favorite strawberry jam in this recipe.

    Crock Pot Chocolate Strawberry Cake

Honey gives this Valentine’s Day-ready chocolate strawberry cake its irresistible sweetness. Bonus - since this cake is made entirely in a Crock Pot, you won’t risk heating the entire house with your oven during the warmer months.

    Super Easy Strawberry Shortcake

Brighten breakfast or brunchtime with this refrigerator buttermilk biscuit strawberry shortcake. Each biscuit serves as the crumbly shortcake bed for fresh sliced strawberries and vanilla whipped cream.

This recipe is a testament to the versatility of refrigerated biscuits. They have many sweet and savory uses, from Crock Pot Monkey Bread to homemade donuts.

Strawberry Cake Mix Cookies text printed over pink cookies on a wire rack

3 Ingredient Strawberry Cake Mix Cookies

Strawberry cake mix is your fast track to these pretty-in-pink strawberry cookies, which we’ve customized using different chocolate chip varieties, multicolored sprinkles, and Valentine’s Day-colored M&Ms. Mix your ingredients into a large bowl, throw in your extras, and bake.

Slow Cooker Crock Pot Strawberry Crisp

Ginger adds a nice bite to this ultra-textured slow cooker strawberry vanilla crisp that pairs beautifully with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. We’ve even considered making a version with rhubarb.

    Homemade Strawberry Chipotle Jam

This summer jam is perfect as a topping for a savory yet amped ice cream sundae. It is also great for canning and freezing so that you have some way past strawberry season.

Swap the chipotle peppers for your favorite hotter variety if you want a bolder strawberry jam. Otherwise, eliminate it if you don’t want a kick of hot peppers.

Red Robin Freckled Lemonade text printed over a glass filled with strawberry lemonade and a lemon wheel

    Copycat Red Robin Freckled Lemonade

This recipe for Copycat Red Robin Freckled Lemonade tastes like the real thing due to Minute Maid lemonade, which the chain uses in its restaurants. You can easily use fresh lemonade if you prefer.

Want a spiked version perfect for summer sipping? Add regular or citrus vodka to the mix.

The Perfect Storm Cocktail text printed over a glass with a pink cocktail

    The Perfect Storm Cocktail

Ingredients: Bacardi Rum, Bacardi Spiced Rum, Monin Strawberry Syrup, Cranberry Juice, Lime Juice

We unearthed this gem after obliging ourselves to explore as many Alchemy Bar offerings as possible on one of our Carnival Cruises. The premium onboard cocktail venue’s creations are part of the Carnival Cheers Drink Package.

You’ll love the Alchemy Bar’s fruity, rum-based take on the classic Dark ’N’ Stormy. Monin Strawberry Syrup is the sweetener that makes this cocktail live up to its name.

    Coral Reef Cocktail

Ingredients: Vodka, Malibu Coconut Rum, Strawberries

This strawberry and coconut blender cocktail is as smooth as a day in paradise. Its deep, bright orange hues are the color of the coral formations found in tropical waters. Serve this cocktail in a wine goblet.

Lava Flow Cocktail printed over a tiki glass with a pineapple and cherry

    Lava Flow Cocktail

Ingredients: Light Rum, Malibu Coconut Rum, Strawberries, Banana, Pineapple Juice, Cream of Coconut

This sweet yet pleasant tropical blender drink gets its white and red swirls from Malibu, cream of coconut, and strawberries. It is one of our favorites to make when 5 O'clock Aloha Fridays hit.

    FAQ about Strawberries

    How to store Strawberries?

Strawberries should be stored in the refrigerator. Make sure to wash the strawberries when you are ready to eat them. Line the container with a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture.

    How to freeze Strawberries?

Wash the strawberries before freezing them. Air dry before placing them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer until the strawberries are frozen.

Transfer the strawberries to a freezer bag with the date. Frozen strawberries should last up to 6 months in the freezer.

    Favorite Kitchen Tools

These are some of our favorite kitchen tools when making strawberry recipes. We used these daily as we work in the kitchen.

Heat resistant potholders - A couple of years ago, we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on, and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then, we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.

Baking Sheets - We are huge fans of these baking sheets with sides. You don't have to worry; you will remove the cookies from the oven and have them slide right off.

Microwave Silicone cover - I swear by these lid covers to help prevent butter splatters when melting butter in the microwave. I have had way too many butter explosions while baking. These lid covers help keep the butter in the bowl and not on the roof of your microwave.

Large Mixing Bowl - We are big fans of this glass batter bowl that has a handle. It makes it easy to mix ingredients and keeps the mixing bowl steady on the counter.

Hand Mixer/Stand Mixer - You can mix this with either a hand mixer or your stand mixer.

Parchment Paper -  I love that I can use parchment paper to help make it easier to remove the brownie/ cookies. They also make clean-up a breeze. If you are not using parchment paper you will want to spray non-stick cooking spray on your baking sheet to help the cookies not stick.

Blender - We are big fans of the Ninja Blender and how well it makes frozen drinks and milkshakes

I'm going to try the crockpot freezer jam this spring. I didn't think freezer jam could get any easier, but this is it! My favorite strawberry recipes are cobbler, and using fresh strawberries in spinach salad.
