While I love classic chocolate chip cookies, there is something magical about chewy M&M Cookies. They have the added crunch of the M&Ms, plus they are so colorful and fun.

I also love that you can customize them for the holidays with different colored M&Ms. When we moved from Spokane, WA, to Gulf Shores, AL, recently and cleaned out the pantry, I had to admit that I love holiday M&Ms.

I had an entire container filled with bags of holiday M&Ms that I planned to use for recipes. The colors in the container represented almost every holiday.

We ate a ton of M&Ms on the drive across the country. They were a great sweet treat during our four days in the car with six cats.

brown sugar, flour, granulated sugar, salt, baking powder, butter, eggs, chocolate chips and M&M package on a white counter

    Ingredients

    • Unsalted Butter, room temperature
    • Light Brown Sugar
    • Granulated Sugar
    • Eggs
    • Pure Vanilla extract
    • All-Purpose Flour
    • Baking Soda
    • Salt
    • M&M Chocolate Candies

M&Ms - You can use regular or holiday M&Ms

    Equipment Needed

    • Hand Mixer - A hand electric mixer makes this recipe easy to mix. You can also stir with a wooden spoon or spatula. A stand mixer with the paddle attachment would also work.
    • Large Mixing Bowlย - We are big fans of this glass batter bowl that has a handle. It makes it easy to mix ingredients and keeps the mixing bowl steady on the counter
    • Teaspoon and tablespoons
    • Cookie Scoop - A scoop helps get even cookie sizes.
    • Spatula - Make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl to get all of the dry ingredients mixed in.
    • Parchment Paperย - We suggest using parchment paper to make it easier to remove the cookies.
    • Baking Sheetsย - We are huge fans of these baking sheets with sides. You don't have to worry; you will remove cookies from the oven and have them slide right off.
    • Heat resistant potholdersย - A couple of years ago, we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a stove burner on, and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then, we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead + Storage: Cookie dough is very make-ahead-friendly! The USDA recommends refrigerating homemade cookie dough in airtight containers and baking cookies within four days.

    Freezing/How to Freeze:

You can also freeze cookie dough safely; just use it within two months. If youโ€™ve prepared a lot of M&M Cookie Dough and donโ€™t want to use it all at once, you can portion the amount youโ€™d like to bake each time into separate containers so that you are only pulling out what you need and have more for later.

Martha Stewart recommends chilling cookie dough for at least half an hour before baking, chill dough cooks more evenly

The most you need to do to prepare frozen cookie dough for the oven is to remove it from the freezer and let it defrost overnight in the fridge for even baking.

How to Reheat: The microwave is the easiest way to reheat your M&M Cookies if you prefer warm cookies. Place the cookies in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate and heat for about ten seconds.

    Recipe Variations

Substitutions: We used regular M&Ms, but you can use peanut M&Ms for extra crunch and holiday M&Ms if you make them for an specific occasion or even mini M&Ms.

Optional - add in chocolate chips

Vegetarian Option: This cookie recipe is naturally vegetarian.

Vegan Option: Replace the unsalted butter, eggs, and M&M candies with plant-based substitutes to make these cookies vegan.

Gluten-Free: Gluten-free eaters should replace the all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour. Mars, the brand that makes M&M candies, confirms that its regular M&Ms are gluten-free, but its other varieties are not.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes X servings. It doubles and triples readily to your desired yield.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains XX grams of sugar per serving. Replace both sugars and the M&Ms with sugar-free substitutes to make it sugar-free.
