You may be surprised that this easy Baby Guinness Shot contains no popular Irish stout beer. Rather, this layered shot is made with Baileyโ€™s Irish Cream and Kahlรบa Coffee Liqueur, poured masterfully into a shot glass to look like a tiny glass of Guinness.ย

Guinness is a traditional Irish Stout enjoyed on St. Patrick's Day and year-round. This layered cocktail shot plays on a pint of Guinness made fun-sized.

We found these super fun mini beer mug shot glasses and had to use them to make this cocktail shot. We used these beer mug shot glasses when we made the Mini Beer Shot and Leprechaun Beer Shot, and I am always searching for cocktail shots to use these fun glasses for.

These Baby Guinness Shooters remind me of learning to pull the perfect pint of Guinness while visiting the Dublin Storehouse in Ireland. My husband loved this tour and enjoyed every last drop of the Guinness we had learned to pour since I am not a fan of it. LOL!

He keeps telling me we must return to Dublin and explore more, including a return visit to the Dublin Storehouse. I would like to visit the Jameson Distillery on Bow St. to learn more about the craft of Irish Whiskey.

Until we return to Dublin, we will keep enjoying this Baby Guinness Shot and reminiscing about our last trip to Ireland.

This layered shot is one of my favorite St. Patrick's Day cocktails! It looks like actual Guinness, just in a tiny beer mug.

We also serve Shamrock Shake, Green Beer, Fuzzy Leprechaun Cocktails, Nutty Irishmen, and, of course, frothy pints of Guinness.

If you are hosting a St. Patrick's Day party or heading to one, we put together an entire post of Irish Toasts so you can say Slรกinte perfectly!

    Ingredient List

If you are wondering what's in a baby Guinness shot don't worry it is only 2 ingredients!

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make an epic Baby Guinness Shot - donโ€™t worry, there are only two! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

    • Baileys Original Irish Cream celebrates decadence and the Irish landscape, combining fine Irish whiskey and spirits, Irish dairy cream, and rich chocolate and vanilla flavors. You can use any Irish Cream Liqueur if you don't have Baileys.
    • Kahlua Coffee Liqueur: We use Kahlua in this cocktail shot, but you can use any brand of Coffee Liqueur. Kahlรบa is a rum and coffee liqueur.

If you don't have Bailey's or Kahlua you can use another Irish cream or coffee liqueur to make this cocktail shot. Just make sure the density of your favorite coffee liqueur is heavier than the Irish Cream. Other coffee liqueurs include Tia Maria

    Equipment Needed

Mini Beer Shot Glass - This is the mini beer glass Iโ€™ve shown in the post It helps make the shot look like a miniature pint of Guinness.

2 ounce shot glasses - We love these 2 oz shot glasses especially for layered shots.

Bar Spoon - Bar spoons help to create layers in the cocktail shot. They fit perfectly into the cocktail shot glass.

How to Make a Baby Guinness Shot

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post but here's a quick version.

Pour the Kahlua Coffee Liqueur in the bottom of the shot glass.ย  Try to pour directly in the middle of the glass to prevent Kahlua getting onto the side of the shot glass. This will help keep the distinct layers in the drink.

Slowly pour the Irish cream over the back of a spoon so it forms the "foam" on top of the coffee liqueur. We use a bartending spoon since the spoon portion is small enough to fit inside of the shot glass. The secret to getting the perfect foamy head on top of the Kahlua is to SLOWLY pour over the back of the spoon.

You can use a regular teaspoon but check before pouring that it fits in the shot glass you are using.

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead + Storage: If you prefer your Baby Guinness Cocktail chilled, place the Kahlua and Bailey's in the fridge to cool before mixing, or shake each ingredient separately with a cocktail shaker to lower the temperature. Rinse the cocktail shaker between liquors to ensure they don't mix.

Baby Guinness Jello Shots: Made with unflavored gelatin, Bailey's Irish Creme, Crรจme de Cacao or chocolate liqueur, Guinness Irish Stout, and Patron XO Cafe or Kahlรบa, party-ready Baby Guinness Jello Shots are a decadent delight!

    Recipe Variations

Substitutions: If you don't have Baileys Irish Creme or Kahlรบa, use another Irish cream or coffee liqueur to make this cocktail shot. Just make sure the density of your favorite coffee liqueur is heavier than the Irish Cream. Other coffee liqueurs include Tia Maria, Cafรฉ Patrรณn XO Tequila (coffee-flavored tequila), Black Sambuca, and Galliano Espresso Coffee Liquor.

Vegetarian Option: Since dairy is the only animal product in Baileys and Kahlรบa, this shot is vegetarian-safe.

Vegan Option: Since Baileys and Kahlรบa contain dairy, vegans must use alternates to make this layered shot. Baileys has an almond milk-based liqueur, Baileys Almande, for plant-based drinkers. We havenโ€™t found a vegan substitute for Kahlรบa, but Vegan in the Freezer has a homemade recipe for this popular coffee liqueur.

Gluten-Free: Kahlua's FAQs confirm that the entire product line contains no gluten, while Baileys Almande is gluten-free.ย

Alcohol-Free Option: Use a zero-proof Coffee Liqueur and homemade Irish Cream with zero-proof whiskey.

Larger Group/More Servings: Due to the layered aspect of this shot, itโ€™s best enjoyed made-to-order. Baby Guinness Jello Shots are fantastic for larger groups and parties!

Sugar-Free: We havenโ€™t found viable sugar-free substitutes for Baileys or Kahlรบa, so skip this shot if sugar is a dietary concern. The web also has a treasure trove of sugar-free homemade recipes for both liqueurs if you donโ€™t mind rolling up your sleeves!

Baby Guinness Jello Shots - These Jello Shots are made with unflavored gelatin, Bailey's Irish Creme, Crรจme de Cacao or chocolate liqueur, Guinness Irish Stout, and Patron XO Cafe or Kahlua

Alcohol - I have seen the Kahlua changed out for Cafe Patron XO Tequila, Black Sambuca, Galliano Espresso Coffee Liquor

Chilled - If you prefer your Baby Guinness Cocktail chilled you can place the Kahlua and Bailey's in the fridge to cool before mixing or use a cocktail shaker and shake each of the ingredients separately to chill them. You will need to rinse the cocktail shaker between liquors to make sure they don't mix.

Vegan - Baileys Almande is an almond milk version of Original Bailey's Irish Cream. 000

Mocktail/Non-Alcoholic - Use a zero-proof Coffee Liqueur and homemade Irish Cream with zero-proof whiskey.

When to serve a Baby Guinness Shot

    • St Patrickโ€™s Day
    • Bachelor Party
    • Game Night
    • After dinner drink

This Baby Guinness recipe is perfect any time you want a fun cocktail shooter that at first glance looks like a Guinness.

One thing to remember is this is not a sipping drink. It is meant to be consumed in one shot. This way you get the flavor of both ingredients.

What to serve with a Baby Guinness Shot

Appetizers - Reuben Dip, Guinness Beer Cheese Dip,

Entree - Corned Beef Shepherds Pie, Easy Shepherds Pie, Guinness Corned Beef, Guinness Beef Stew, Crockpot Corned Beef and Cabbage

Sides - Fried Cabbage, Guinness beer bread, Green Jello Saladย

Dessert - Watergate Salad, Lucky Charms Treats, Fruity Pebbles Treats, Guinness Chocolate Balls, Baileys Whipped Cream

    Recipe Tips

This cocktail can be served at room temperature or you can chill the Bailey's and Kahlua before serving.
