There are various ways to make the Nutty Irishman Drink, depending on how many ingredients you want to mix.

We like making a fun cocktail shooter, but you can also make this drink with coffee, Irish Whiskey, or even hot chocolate/cocoa.

The main ingredients are hazelnut liqueur and Irish Cream. We mainly use Frangelico and Bailey's Irish Cream to make this cocktail recipe.

This layered cocktail shot is perfect for St. Patrick's Day or any day you want a fun, easy-to-make layered cocktail.

    Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make an epic Nutty Irishman Drink! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

    • Frangelico
    • Baileys Irish Cream Liqueurย

    Equipment Needed

    • OXO Angled Jiggers: These jiggers are our go-to measuring tools for cocktails. They work perfectly for pouring in layers for cocktails.
    • 2-Ounce Shot Glasses: We love these 2-ounce shot glasses, especially for layered shots.
    • Bar Spoon: Bar spoons help to create layers in the cocktail shot. They fit perfectly into the cocktail shot glass.
    • Cocktail Shaker - If you plan to make this into a full size drink.

How to make a Nutty Irishman drink

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here's a quick version.

Pour Frangelico into the bottom of the shot glass. Avoid getting it on the sides of the glass when pouring.

Slowly pour Bailey's Irish Cream over the back of a bar spoon to create the distinct layers between the two flavors.

    Preparation and Storage

    Make Ahead:ย

For presentation purposes, we recommend making your Nutty Irishman Drink as you plan to drink it so you get the layers.ย

If the layers get mixed, don't worry; the drink still tastes fantastic.

    Freezing/How to Freeze:

If you want this drink chilled, serve it over ice in a rocks glass or put the Frangelico and Baileys in the fridge before making it. You can also chill any glassware in the freezer for half an hour before serving it.

    Recipe Variations

    Substitutions:ย

We made this recipe with Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur and Baileys Irish Cream, but you can use any hazelnut liqueur and Irish cream you enjoy the taste of.

We even have a homemade Irish cream if you want to go the DIY route for this ingredient.

If you are mixing this with coffee you can try espresso vodka to make a hot coffee cocktail.

    Vegetarian + Vegan Options:

Frangelico is vegan, but Baileys contains dairy. If you are vegan or make this cocktail for vegan friends, Baileys has Baileys Almande, a dairy-free alternative made with vegan-friendly vanilla and almonds.

    Gluten-Free:

Frangelico is on Celiac.comโ€™s list of gluten-free liqueurs.

Gluten-free drinkers should use a gluten-free alternative to Baileys, as Baileys does not guarantee that its products are gluten-free.

Alcohol-Free Option: Replace the Frangelico and Baileys Irish Cream with NA alternatives to make alcohol-free Nutty Irishman Shots.

Smaller Serving Size: The written recipe makes one 2-ounce Nutty Irishman Shot, but you can halve it for 1-ounce shots if you only have 1-ounce shot glasses.

    Larger Group/More Servings:ย

Double the recipe and pour it into an ice-filled old-fashioned glass for a full-sized Nutty Irishman Drink.

We have seen some Nutty Irishman Cocktail recipes that add hot coffee for a spin on Baileys Coffee. Feel free to try it if you enjoy all these flavors together!

    Sugar-Free:

The written recipe contains 15 grams of sugar per serving. We have not seen alcoholic sugar-free hazelnut liqueur or Irish cream alternatives at stores, so sugar-free drinkers must skip this sweet shot or make their liqueurs using the many sugar-free recipes online.

    ย

Tips for the Best Nutty Irishman Drink

    • If you want to add another layer to this drink, add some whipped cream to the top. Just leave space for it when you fill the shotglass. We have a homemade Baileys Whipped Cream if you love Baileys and want to add more Irish cream yumminess.

What to Serve with a Nutty Irishman Drink

The Nutty Irishman is a layered cocktail shot made with Frangelico and Baileys thatโ€™s as delicious as it is pretty to look at! It would be fantastic for a St. Patrickโ€™s Day brunch or dinner party. Here are some menu planning suggestions.
