I adore it when my loved ones and dear friends come to me with recipe ideas, especially when they are willing to share the kitchen with me to make them.

I must admit I thought the dear friend who introduced me to Salty and Sweet Ruffles Marshmallow Treats had lost her mind. Don't get me wrong, I love Rice Krispie Treats, but making them with potato chips had never even crossed my mind.

She told me the sweet and salty combination would be terrific. Trusting the woman who LOVES ruffles potato chips seemed like a good idea!

The combination of salty and sweet was, well, perfect. I kept returning for another piece because the flavor was unexpected.

I am interested in making a few other adaptions of this recipe. Keep an eye out for future exciting marshmallow treats.

Have you made any fun gooey marshmallow treats? I would love to hear about them!ย  We made crunch berry marshmallow treats that were a lot of fun. I keep adapting our Rice Krispies treats to new flavors.ย

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: Thereโ€™s no need to prep these Ruffles Marshmallow Treats in advance! They come together in under half an hour, from start to finish.

    Storage:ย

For the best results, keep leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy them within three to four days. Refrigerating them will make them hard and tough to eat.

You can wrap them individually in plastic for grab-and-go treats that are perfect for packing into lunches.

Freezing/How to Freeze: Freeze leftover treats in an airtight, freezer-safe container and enjoy them within one to two months.

How to Reheat: If they feel too stiff, you can microwave your Sweet and Salty Ruffles Marshmallow treats for a few seconds. You can let frozen portions defrost at room temperature and dive in once they feel soft enough to bite into.

    ย

    Recipe Variations

    Substitutions:ย

You can use any Ruffles flavor in this recipe if you are okay with that flavor in a sweet and salty treat. The wavy potato chips work perfectly for this recipe.ย

You can use butter or margarine, depending on what you have in your fridge when you make these Ruffles Marshmallow Treats.

Optional - Use a bit of vanilla extract to balance the sweetness of the marshmallows. You can add in chocolate chips or spread melted chocolate over the top for a new flavor.

Vegetarian Option: Use gelatin-free vegetarian mini marshmallows to make this recipe vegetarian.

    Vegan Option:

Besides using plant-based marshmallows, vegans should swap the butter for a plant-based alternative.

The flavored varieties frequently contain milk-derived ingredients like buttermilk and whey, so Ruffles Original is the easiest option unless you want to read every product label.

Gluten-Free: According to Frito-Lay, the Baked Cheddar & Sour Cream, Original, Baked Original, and Simply Sea Salted flavors are gluten-free.

Smaller Serving Size: The written recipe makes 16 servings and scales quickly to your desired yield using the slider in the recipe card.

Make It Spicy: Weโ€™ve seen recipes that add cinnamon or cinnamon sugar to give these Ruffles Marshmallow Treats a sweet spice. Chai or pumpkin spice would also be fantastic, especially if you make these during the fall.

Larger Group/More Servings: This recipe doubles and triples like a dream! Make sure you have enough baking pans if you scale up.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 8 grams of sugar per serving, with less than 1 gram coming from Ruffles Original. Make it sugar-free with sugar-free mini marshmallows.

I can't believe I came across this. In August I got together with friends that are all BIG fans of marshmallow anything. Bringing the infamous krispie treats is just traditional. There have been the variations of course. Mini chips, peanut butter chips, pastel colored marshmallows, M&M's, nuts (salted and unsalted) toasted coconut and chocolate covered peanuts and raisins. So I decided to try pretzles. I made them just like you did with the chips, only I used a rolling pin on a bag of pretzles. They started out to be a joke , but turned out to be the first dessert to be eaten completely. So made them again for a family gathering and this time I used mini chips too. Who doesn't love chocolate covered pretzels? They too were the first dessert to go and they were gone before dinner. When they found out what they were everyone wanted to taste them and they didn't stop till they were gone. Sometimes I melt chocolate and just cover the top like a frosting, or dip half, or drizzle with caramel. Now I will bring your potato chip treats, because we are all chip lovers and they sound awesome. What's not to love?

These were good, but I had to add one more T of butter, and a total of 6 cups of marshmallows for 6 cups of Ruffles. Without adding the extra, there wasn't enough marshmallow to mix with the chips. It was 90 degrees on the day I made these, so my husband put the pan in the sunroom while I melted more marshmallows. They turned out fine with the extra marshmallow.
