We recently had the opportunity to tour a Washington potato farm, and I have to admit that I will never look at a baked potato the same way again.

You can check out our Instagram page to see photos from the event. It was my first time visiting a potato farm, and I learned so much about Washington potatoes.

We came home from the event craving baked potatoes, so I whipped out the air fryer and made loaded baked potatoes for dinner that night. There is just something so delicious about an epic baked potato.

My husband and I love being able to customize them with our favorite toppings. I am all in for garlic powder, butter, and cheddar cheese on my air-fried baked potato.

My husband wants all the sour cream, bacon, and cheese on his.

What are your favorite toppings on a baked potato?

You can also air fry sweet potatoes, which cook slightly faster than regular potatoes.

These air fryer russet potatoes make a great side dish, or you can enjoy them for a main entree. Many nights, we have loaded baked potatoes with a few other side dishes for dinner.

The crispy skin from air frying is so good! Similar to the oven without having to wait for it to heat up and the baking time is so much shorter.

    Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make an epic Air Fryer Baked Potato! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

    • Russet Potatoes (medium potatoes)
    • Olive Oil Spray or Avocado oil spray

Potato Toppings: Butter, Sour Cream, Garlic Powder, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Taco Meat, Green Onions, Chives, Everything Bagel Seasoning, Shredded Chicken, Kosher salt or Sea Salt and Black Pepper, Chili, Salsa, Bacon Bits, diced tomatoes

    Equipment Needed

    • Air Fryer: We suggest getting an air fryer that is bigger than you think you will need. We found once we started using the air fryer, we ended up using it for more meals and larger meals.
    • Tongs: Make sure to grab kitchen tongs to remove the potatoes from the air fryer! They will be HOT HOT HOT!
    • Fork or knife to prick the outsides of the potatoes.

How to make an Air Fryer Baked Potato

I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here's a quick version.

    For piercing a potato

Step 1 - Clean/scrub your potatoes and pat dry.

Piece the potato with a fork several times or all over the potato.

Lightly spray with olive oil cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt if desired.

two potatoes in an air fryer basket

Step 2 - Place potatoes in the air fryer basket evenly spread out.

Air fry and check to see if the potatoes are done. I use a fork to see how far it can easily pierce the potato. If it is not fork tender air fry for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Flip the potatoes when you put them back in the air fryer to make sure they evenly cook.

Use tongs to pick up the air fried potatoes! The crispy potato skins are amazing but also really really hot!

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: For the freshest, crispiest baked potatoes, we recommend making them to order.

Storage: Store your baked potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator and enjoy them within four days.

Freezing/How to Freeze: You can safely freeze your Air Fryer Baked Potatoes, but remember that they will not have the same texture or quality as their fresh counterparts. Wrap them in foil, store them in an airtight, freezer-safe container, and enjoy them within three months.

How to Reheat: We like reheating our leftover baked potatoes in the air fryer.

    Recipe Variations

Substitutions: We make this recipe with russet potatoes. You can cook other potato varieties in the air fryer, but you must adjust the cooking time.

Vegetarian + Vegan Option: This recipe is naturally vegetarian and vegan, as the core ingredients are potatoes, olive oil, and salt.

Gluten-Free: This recipe is also naturally gluten-free.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes two baked russet potatoes, but you can adjust it to any serving size. How many you make depends on your air fryerโ€™s capacity, so plan extra time to work in batches if you make a large batch.

Make It Spicy: Spice up your baked potatoes with your favorite spice or spicy seasoning blend before cooking or by adding your go-to hot sauce as a garnish afterward.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 1 gram of sugar per serving, but the final sugar content will depend on what type of potato you use and the toppings you add.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Baked Potato

    • Use similar-sized potatoes so they finish cooking at the same time.
    • Skip wrapping the potatoes in foil to get perfect, crispy-skinned potatoes!
    • We do not preheat the air fryer before cooking the potatoes. You can preheat the air fryer to 400ยฐF to cut down a few minutes of cooking time.
    • You can easily make these into a fantastic vegetarian air fryer meal.
