Today's Crock Pot chicken Recipe is all about cheesy yummy goodness! Plus there is broccoli which means there is a veggie thrown in also ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, and some chicken and tater tots, we are hitting several food groups in one delicious casserole!

I have been trying to develop a new tater tot casserole recipe. Our hamburger CrockPot Tater Tot Casserole Recipe is one of our most popular recipes. Making a new one with chicken instead of a hamburger was a good idea.

    Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make an epic Chicken Tater Tot Casserole in the Slow Cooker! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

    • Cream of Chicken Soup
    • Evaporated Milk
    • Black Pepper
    • Garlic
    • Cheddar Cheese
    • Chicken Breast
    • Frozen Broccoli
    • Frozen Tater Tots

    Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead + Storage: This hearty and filling chicken and broccoli casserole will feed your household multiple times, especially if youโ€™re like ours, and typically only cook for two unless entertaining guests. Leftovers keep in the fridge for three to four days when stored in an airtight container.

Freezing/How to Freeze: Leftovers stored in an airtight, freezer-safe container freeze for three to four months. Weโ€™ve heard of folks who freeze half of the pan after cooking it.

How to Reheat: Thaw leftovers overnight in the fridge, then reheat them using your microwave, oven, or stovetop. Defrosting your leftovers before reheating them ensures they heat evenly and your food doesnโ€™t have cold spots once plated. Regardless of the method, always reheat leftovers to an internal temperature of 165ยฐF.

    Recipe Variations + Tipsย

    Substitutions:

We use yellow cheddar cheese because we enjoy the combination of broccoli and yellow cheddar, but you can use any shredded cheese your household would enjoy. White cheddar, Monterey jack, and mozzarella are fantastic options.

Also, while any condensed soup works, you can replace the cream of chicken with another flavor to create a unique spin on this casserole dish.

You can use rotisserie chicken to save time with this chicken tater tot casserole recipe.

We used broccoli but you could also use a mixed veggies mix with peas and carrots for additional vegetables.

Vegetarian Option: Vegetarians should swap the chicken and cream of chicken soup with plant-based alternatives.

Cream of mushroom soup, cream of celery, or other cream soupย  would work great.

Vegan Option: In addition to the guidance for vegetarians, vegans will also want to use plant-based substitutes for cheddar cheese and evaporated milk.

Gluten-Free: This CrockPot Tater Tot Chicken Casserole is gluten-free if your ingredients are gluten-free. Cream of chicken soup is the biggest culprit, so check for a gluten-free label on this and your remaining ingredients if you are highly sensitive.

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe yields six servings. Scale it up or down to your desired number of servings.

Make it Spicy: Mix in your favorite spicy wing sauce or hot sauce to infuse heat into your casserole!

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 7 grams of sugar per serving. The components of this recipe donโ€™t typically have a large amount of sugar, so use ingredients with the lowest sugar content possible if this is a dietary concern.

I can't say enough about how good this is! I'm not a fan of canned chicken so substituted about 1-1/2 lbs of cooked Chicken breast. Wasn't sure about the garlic because the recipe didn't specify the type so I used fresh. Definitely going in my recipe box!

      Hi Tammilee,
Have you ever tried to make this recipe ahead of time and freeze it? If so, how would you assemble and what would you wait to put in when you want to make it? I thought maybe the tater tots shouldn't go in, and maybe the cheese? Please let me know your thoughts.

It looks so cream and cheesy! I love anything with cheese especially in the crockpot. This is something I can definitely see everyone in my house enjoying and wanting seconds. I will be trying this next week.

I always find the crockpot so difficult to clean. I use to spray it first with Pam spray, but I decided I don't want to use Pam anymore. I like the sponge that you have written about. I have seen them in the stores, and will try to remember to get one too.

You know, I have never made this because it never looked that good to me with hamburger. However, this one I could do. The chicken was a perfect addition. And you cannot use your slow cooker without Scotch scrubby sponges.

I love my crockpot but when food gets stuck especially in those corners...its a mess. I tried using everything but the hubs is strong so he can usually scrub it out if it gets too bad

I absolutely HATE sponges because how nasty they start to smell. I think I need to stock up on these odor resistant ones for sure.

And this recipe is definitely getting made ASAP! tater tot casserole is one of my favs but my recipe is a bit different so yours would be a nice change to what we're use to.
